Ntoko performed magic and managed to keep Kadambo in lock-up despite pressure from some pretty powerful offices. It seemed that Kadambo’s British benefactor from when he was a child had a few important friends who had been left behind to keep an eye on him when the benefactor returned to the UK. They tried their best, but Ntoko was stubborn, few could have the wherewithal to stand up to him when he decided that he was not going to let go.
Kate got to the office early, for the first time since Ntoko had arrived she even beat him into the station. It was the 29th of August, 14 days after Sarah’s murder. Either they were right and Kadambo was their man, or another woman would lose her life before the day was finished. Kate just hoped that her instincts were right and they had their murderer.
To make sure, she wanted to get the paperwork in order to get permission to see Kadambo’s file at the Counselling Centre. It was 6:45, she wanted to be waiting at the magistrate, Rre Ndlovu’s office at 7:30 when he got in to get everything approved so that by 8:00 she had the file in her hand.
“Ah-ha! Today, you’re here early,” Ntoko said poking his head in her office.
“I’m on my way out. I’m getting that file and I’m getting it now,” Kate said grabbing up her purse.
Ntoko stopped her at the door with a concerned face. “It’s day 14.”
“Believe me, I hadn’t forgotten.”
Kate had no problem with the magistrate and was waiting at the Counselling Centre when Margaret arrived to open up. “I got the court order for Kadambo’s file.”
“Good morning to you too Kate,” Margaret said opening the lock and getting inside the office. “You know, Kate, I was thinking last night about our conversation. You’re not a very good listener when you let your emotions get out of hand are you?”
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Kate was in no mood to discuss anything with Margaret.
“Did you hear anything of what I said last night?” She opened her office and went around pulling curtains back to let the sun in. “Didn’t I tell you that it wasn’t as you think?”
“You’ve told me lots of things and I’m starting to think most of it was rubbish.”
“Really? Kate I wish you wouldn’t be so angry. Please take a seat for a minute and I’ll get you Kadambo’s file. There will be nothing in there to help your case, but I’ll give it to you anyway.” She got the file and handed it to Kate and sat down next to her. “Kate, Kadambo was not the one I was trying to protect.”
Kate was paging through the file and didn’t think she heard properly. “What? Who were you trying to protect then?”
“Goitsemang.”
“Dr. Basupi? What are you talking about Margaret? Please don’t let this be another wild goose chase. I think we might have put an end to this case. If we haven’t, I can’t be messing around here. I’m working to a killer’s schedule.”
Margaret shook her head. “It’s not Kate. I just want you to know this. We’re friends Kate, and I don’t want this to come out and then you think I’ve lied to you again. I’ve never kept back anything that I thought would help your case. I still believe that Kadambo is innocent. When he’s on his meds he’s fine, you’ve seen him. I thought about what you said yesterday, and if he did threaten Rachel, maybe he is worse than I thought. Maybe you know something I don’t. But I never would have withheld that information if I truly thought that he was dangerous to anyone. Please believe me, Kate.”
Kate couldn’t help but believe what Margaret was saying was true. She didn’t want to think that she was such a bad judge of character. How could both she and Rachel have been wrong about Margaret? She was coming to believe that they hadn’t been. With her anger under control, Kate was seeing things a bit clearer. Margaret was trying to do her job, unfortunately, if she did her job properly it would keep Kate from being effective at hers. “So what about Dr. Basupi? What does he have to do with anything?”
“Kate, please, just know I hadn’t told you this because I was trying to protect my husband’s reputation. I know that this has nothing to do with the case, but if you end up getting an order to go through all of my files it will come out. It would make the situation worse between you and me. I don’t want that. I’m just hoping that you will keep it as quiet as possible.”
“What is it Margaret?” Kate was getting concerned. What secret was Margaret hiding about her husband?
“When Goitsemang was an undergraduate, he attempted to murder his sister. He had a psychotic break. He attacked her and tried to kill her. That’s how we met. I was doing my internship at Lobatse Mental Hospital where he stayed after it happened. There were never any police involved, the family tried to keep it quiet, though his sister will have nothing to do with him even now.”
“How long was he in the hospital?”
“He spent six months in Lobatse and then he was transferred to a private clinic in Johannesburg. He took meds for some years, but now everything is fine. He has check ups every six months with a psychiatrist in South Africa.”
“Margaret when was this?”
“More than twenty years ago now. He’s fine now, really, but you know how Batswana are. If you’re crazy, you’re crazy forever. There is no cure. It would ruin him if it got out. His files are kept here. I’m assigned as his local therapist if he needs any help. If the University knew, he’d lose his job. That would kill him Kate. His work is paramount. I just wanted to protect Goitsemang.”
Kate knew exactly what Margaret was saying and she knew that she was right. “Listen Margaret, I’ll do what I can to not let this get out. My hope is that we’ve got our man. In any case, we’ll know by tonight.”
“Tonight?”
“Margaret, it’s been 14 days since Sarah’s murder. If he’s still out there, our murderer is going to kill again tonight.”
