Unpacking Unfamiliar Fashion terms
This week, as we near the end of September Literacy Month, I thought it would be great to teach you some fashion terms that you might not be familiar with. I also hope that you found this month’s blogs educational, and remember to send us topics of things you would like featured in the Just Trendi blog.
Visit us on Facebook and Twitter for more updates and pictures.
Boyfriend – The term usually refers to your male partners, ladies, but in fashion it means ‘borrowed from the boyfriend’. These are those pieces that might not look out of place in a man’s wardrobe.
Colour block – This trend has been around for a while now. It involves wearing multiple solid colours in an outfit. Just be careful of this trend because it can quickly turn so bad and look like you have no sense of style at all.
Diffusion line – A secondary line of merchandise created by a fashion house/designer retailed at lower prices. Yeah, it’s the designers feeding our aspirations.
Fashion icon – A person that is well known as highly fashionable within the fashion world. Think of Anna Wintour, Naomi Campbell, Audrey Hepburn, etc…
Flatforms – A flat, platform shoe. They give you the comfort of flats with as well, the height of heels. It might be a little hard to walk on uneven surfaces but the hack is to keep your weight in your heels rather than your toes.
Granny chic – Grand ma does know best it seems, even when it comes to fashion. This fashion trend is quite the rage, from crazy fur coats, tweeds to blanket cardigans. The key to acing this look is to not go overboard with the inspiration and to experiment with colour so it remains young.
Haute couture – (Pronounced as oht koo-tyr) A French Word that literally translates to high fashion. To be Haute Couture, the garment has to be completely hand sewn in Paris and made on order. This is one term which is used incorrectly left, right and centre
Iridescent – The fabric appears to change colour when it catches light. Perfect to wear to an evening out dancing.
Ombré – (Pronounced as om-bray) It simply means colour that graduates from light to dark. Talk about being ubiquitous, this trend is literally everywhere, from clothes and nails to hair.
Personal Style – A style that speaks true to you which is ever evolving, so it is something that inspires you and tells the world a bit about yourself.
Skort – A skort looks like a skirt from the front and shorts from the back. Works for us, the comfort of shorts with the femininity of a skirt.
Trend(s) – A trend is what’s hip or popular at a certain point in time. In the fashion world, a trend is a certain style that is popular at that particular season, but it’s prone to change as the seasons, years change.
Vent – A slit at the back of a garment which gives it movement. Commonly seen in pencil skirts, coats and blazers.
Zoot suit – A high waist, wide-legged pants with a long coat and large shoulder pads. Traditionally for men, I think it’s a great spin on the androgynous angle in the 21st century.
I hope you all got those term and the next time someone mentions them you are able to know what they mean. Stay Trendi 🙂
