After Ignite was gone, Edith thrust a pillow at the door. “As if you know what the term “protect” means,’ she said. When she was done, she took out her smartphone and sent Amy a WhatsApp message.

Edith: “Remember when I used to call you Emma? ”

Amy: “Mxm, don’t make me go back to that nightmare, plz.”

Edith: “😉”

Amy: “… Mom doesn’t believe me. I even showed her a vid of Ignite and Illicit forcing themselves on us, but she just turned a blind eye”

Edith: “After that, they’re gonna call themselves parents … that makes the both of us. She doesn’t even believe Malcolm.”

Amy: “Retards. Mom used to love me b4 Illicit came into our lives. I miss those happy moments.”

Edith: “I am so disappointed about your dad, 4rnd.”

Amy: “Thanks, chomi. ❤”

Edith: “Look at the time, let’s sleep. It’s almost 1am, so gud 9nt Emma.”

Amy: “Not now plz, satan. Gud nite”

Amy: “What were u doing on WhatsApp diz late???”

Amy: “🗣E🗣d🗣i🗣t🗣h🗣”

Edith: “So much noise, lol. I was wearing my PJs, I wanted to tell you that I luv u and I value your presence in my life. You’re de only 1 that never broke her promise. ❤”

Amy: “I appreciate you 2 sis.”

After putting her smartphone down, Amy heard her mother on the phone in the lounge, speaking in a very low voice to somebody.

‘I said I’ll tell her when the time’s right, OK?” Deidre muttered. “Can you give me a couple of weeks? I don’t wanna stress her out because she’s writing her finals this coming week. I promise you, I will tell her so don’t call her, I beg of you.”

“Love, who are you talking to on the phone?” Illicit asked. “Come to bed, I’m already missing you.”

“I’m coming baby,” Deirdre called out. “I was thirsty, then I decided to call Gwendolyn and warn her about those conniving brats.”

“Whoever mom was speaking to was not Gwendolyn, I’m a million percent sure of that,” Amy thought to herself. “I’ll tell her when the time’s right now she’s writing her finals.” Whatever she’s hiding, I’ll find it out. She used to care about my well-being back then, not now. What’s she hiding, and who was she talking to?”

The following day, Amy woke up very early, bathed, and texted Edith.

Amy: “I’ve got sumthing 2 tell u. Come meet me at the park.”

Edith: “Ok, I’m on my way.”

15 minutes later, Edith was at the park. “Yeah, I am here, so come on and spill the beans. What’s going on?” she asked. She then gaped at Amy, waiting for an answer. “Today I hope you have your bus ticket on you, right Amy?”

“Yeah, yeah, I do. Now, listen to me,” Amy said, gesturing for Edith to stop talking. “I heard my mom talking to your mom this morning, immediately after we finished chatting.”

“Uhm, Amy you know how my mom hates late night calls,” Edith said confusingly. “She was fast asleep by that time.”

“Bingo!” Amy said while doing a victory dance. “I knew it my mom is hiding something Ed, and I’m going to find it, I tell you. I heard her talking to someone last night, telling that person “I’m waiting for the right time to tell her, right now she’s writing her finals.” What do you think of that Ed?”

Edith, who had left her mouth hanging, just said, “Amy?”

“Edith, what is my mom hiding from me?” Amy asked.

“That’s what we’re going to find out,” Edith said, reassuring her friend.

After a while, the bus came, fetched the two detectives, and took them to school. They were writing a Mathematic Literacy test that day, and when they finished writing, they were given a time table stating when the examinations will be starting. The class cheered because they were delirious about the subject that they will be starting with, which was Life Orientation.

Time flew, and before they knew it, it was already lunch time. The girls then went to sit at their favourite spot under a big tree that provided them with a nice shade.

“I think I already know how I’ll get to the bottom of this,” Amy said.

“What do you mean?” Edith asked.

“I’m talking about getting my mom to tell me the truth about her call this morning,” Amy responded.

“So, are you gonna confront her?”

“Oh, yes I am,” Amy said. “Don’t you think I deserve to know who she was talking to? She sounded very secretive, and why would she lie to Illicit about the phone call?”

“Yeah, you’re right. You deserve to know the truth. So, were you gonna start by only confronting her? What if she refuses to tell you?” Edith asked.

“Well, what else do you have in mind?” Amy asked.

“I don’t know yet, but we’ll get to the bottom of this, don’t worry. For now, let’s just focus on the upcoming exams and how we’ll terminate Ignite and Illicit,” Edith said.

Amy seemed like someone who had been planning things for a very long time, even Edith noticed a smirk across her face that she tried hiding. “What are laughing at Amy?” Edith asked.

“Nothing, I’m just happy about achieving matric so I can move the hell out of that house,” Amy responded.

“Oooooooh OK, Amy,” Edith said with a suspicion look on her face. “What’s going on in that little head of yours lately? You’ve been acting all suspicious.”

“Ed, I am just happy, ok? Nothing’s going on,” Amy responded. “Let’s finish up our sandwich before the siren goes off.”
