I went back to my room and slept. Mom woke me up so that we could go to the police station for questioning.

“You may come in miss.” I went in with my mom’s lawyer.

“What was happening between Tebogo and your sister Tshepiso?” the policeman asked.

“They were dating.”

“Did he abuse her like that?”

“Yes, they were lovebirds at first but when time went by he started showing his true colours. My sister would come home with scars and bruises,” I said sadly.

“Why didn’t she report him?”

“She loved him … I always told her to call the cops, but she refused, she said they loved each other.”

“So you stabbed him?”

“Yes … he wanted to harm me, it was self-defense.”

“Ok.”

He asked a lot of questions and I finally went home.

“Honey… how did it go?”

“Fine.”

Days passed and I really missed my sister.

The day for her funeral came. We prepared ourselves and went to church. Just when the programme was starting Tebogo’s mom came in.

“Where is she? Omphile, you are satisfied right? Are you happy now? Firstly it was your sister following my son around, now you killed him.”

My parents and I stood up.

“I’m talking to you girl with no morals.”

“Yes I’m happy I killed him. Your son brought pain to my sister and to my family.”

“I was the one who was nursing her after your coward son was done beating her. I always saw her cry, she was his punching bag. If Tshepi was your daughter you would understand.”

My dad called the security and she was thrown out. The pastor continued and we went to the graveyard. I thought I was dreaming, I never thought she would die so soon. My heart was broken and when the coffin went down I felt it was the end for me.

When we arrived at home I went to Tshepi’s room and I found a letter.

I always knew that I would die, but I never thought it would be so soon. I loved him and all he did was to break me into pieces. I should’ve listened to you Omphile, I was blinded by love. I never thought I’d be the next victim. Remember what I said Omphile, don’t let a man ruin your life. I love you dear family.

This broke our hearts, but if I got a chance to talk to her I’d say I TOLD YOU SO.
