Higher institutions have a way to get you amazed. I had two lectures that day, that gave me the much needed time to study some of my mates: the fashionistas, the geeks, the semi-nerds, the wannabes, the run girls, the SUs, the pious Muslims, the funny guys, the yahoo guys, etc. Most of these traits aren’t phyically visible, but I could tell who was who thanks to the help of my suspicious instincts.
I decided on those to stay away from, those to relate casually with, those to be afraid of, and those to relate with. I knew I might be wrong about these people, I would never give room for mistakes on my part.
Although my second lecture of the day was a general course which emcompasses different faculties, I got to see my department mates when we were directed to converge at the department’s lecture hall.
Like all first time meetings among course mates, there is always protocol of individual introductions. We were 120 in number, and you could imagine how many hours introductions would take without any rules, so it was decided that everyone would just say their name. Everybody tried to sound different and unique, but I didn’t care.
When it came to my turn, I just said, “My name is Ajibade Abdul Basit Olalekan” quickly like I didn’t care. I noticed a few eyes shifted around, and I later got to know they sized me up as a nerdy Muslim.
What followed next was the issues of Class Governor and Course Representatives. Who in the whole wide world would nominate someone they didn’t know. I thought I was free from any issues here. Three guys would be nominated for Class Governor, and the one with the most votes would be elected and the others would be Course Representatives.
Crazy enough, I was among the three guys nominated. I couldn’t explain that, I didn’t even know who nominated me. I later found out that it was a lady who nominated me. The votes were cast by the raising of hands, and funny enough, I got the second highest number of votes.
“I don’t think I’m ready for this,” I said to myself.
When the votes were cast, we were given the opportunity to accept or reject the election if we wanted.
“This is a dilemma!” I thought.
Tell us: What would you do if you were nominated to be a Course Representative?
