“And who’s that?” asked Samson. “Who is with Lulu?”
“Your friend, the one you claimed used you and whose dream girl you took.”
“Thami? No way. I haven’t spoken to him or seen him since the last time I saw you,” Samson said thinking back.
“Well, we did a little reunion back then, and he agreed to join forces with me.”
“But we’re friends.”
“You broke that friendship! You took something that belonged to him and me — Lulu. You both betrayed us, she took you away from me and you took her away from Thami! Both of you played with our feelings and went on to start a family together. I think I’ll kill you and also your son, and she’ll die of grief all alone. You see, Samson, our world never betrays. When you hurt other people there’s always a price to pay,” said Nothando.
“You’re the bad ones, you’re doing the bad things.”
“Sweetheart, you started it, and now you’re paying for your sins. Thami and I are doing all of this only because you betrayed us. For years I lived a silenced life, betrayed from having a future with the one I loved, which is you. I changed my looks, style, the way I speak, abandoned my friends and family to prove my love to you, but still you refuse. It’s time I embrace the art of love. I’m doing all of this to show you how much I love you. I took your child and trust me, everyone finds me unreasonable, they’re saying it wasn’t necessary, well guess what? I don’t care because I fell deeply for you. I followed you all the way from Durban just to get an opportunity again with you, far away from everyone. But oh, Samson, you don’t want me. I’m very disappointed, but it’s not everyone who gets a happy ending.”
“So it’s true, wherever there’s love there’s always hatred and when there’s hatred, enemies will rise,” Samson said, cringing in pain.
“Oh Samson, that’s the fate of your dysfunctional life.”
“Take me instead, please. Don’t involve my family any further.”
“No, Samson, the best way to kill a man is through taking away what he loves most. Lulu and your son are what you love the most, your only prince and queen. I’m even thinking that maybe it’s them who I’m supposed to be going after.”
“No, Nothando, please don’t,” Samson begged.
“I’m going to walk out of that door, Samson, and finish what I’ve started. I hope to see you soon at their funeral, unlike your daughter’s, which you didn’t attend, Mr Nkalanga.”
“Nothando! Come back! Please, you don’t have to! I’ll give you whatever you want, please!” roared Samson.
“It’s too late,” said Nothando, walking to the door.
“Somebody help!”
“You won’t get any help. They’re all helpless like you!” Nothando laughed.
He couldn’t move and so she walked out without looking back. The world started to shut down for Samson, everything became dark. She left, only leaving behind sounds of Samson’s pounding heart.
“I’ll come after you, I won’t rest until I find you and save my family,” Samson muttered before his eyes closed.
