“How can I get married, ma, when I’m not dating?” Vusumzi asked his mom.
“Vusumzi my son, you want to tell me that you’ve not seen even one maiden who’s worthy of your love?” his mother asked in a concerned voice. Vusumzi shook his head. “Listen son, you have to find a maiden you love, before your father takes a wife for you.” His mother sighed.
“Ubaba wouldn’t do that, ma.” Vusumzi stared at his mom like she was an alien.
“I heard him talking to Ntombi’s father, they plan to wed you two,” his mom told him.
Vusumzi stiffened and rushed out.

“You have to come meet my family,” Vusumzi said to Claudia.
“But, I haven’t finished transitioning,” Claudia said, staring at Vusumzi.
“I know Claudia. But, you’re woman enough on the outside. It’s just your private parts that need surgery. After that, you’ll be a complete woman.” Vusumzi held Claudia close to him.
“When?” Claudia asked.
“This Saturday, before father finds me a wife,” Vusumzi told his lover. Claudia nodded, and embraced Vusumzi. “You have to wear a dress and a headscarf,” Vusumzi continued, untangling himself.
“OK,” Claudia agreed. She was transgender. Her birth name was Clement. Being transgender in that close-minded village proved to be a challenge. She struggled to get the job she did now, as a HR manager. She still got those stares from people whenever she told them she was transitioning.
