At first, all Fana has been praying for was to die. But now he has plans, a mission to carry out when his time comes.
Every day, for four years, he has been visited mostly by Dozi, his real friend. Today he has a special visitor, Cindy.
Fana gets a shock when he sees Cindy sitting on the table, playing with her nails. But then again there’s a part of him that is excited to see her. He remembers the day they first met in the library.
“Is this a surprise?” he folds his arms and smiles, just a little.
Cindy jumps for a hug and doesn’t let go for a while, until Fana hugs her back.
“Hey, are you okay?” Fana asks, causing Cindy to now cry on his shoulder.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t realise I was crying. I know I’m the last person you wanna see right now. I’m scared, Fana,” she says as she lets go of Fana and they sit down.
“What’s going on?” he puts out his hand for Cindy, and she holds it tightly.
“He wants us to have kids. He went to see my family yesterday. I can’t start a family with him, I really cannot,” she says in a whisper.
“But what are you going to do? He has been overpowering you for as long.”
“I don’t know what to do. And you’re the only person I can talk to, the only who’d listen.”
She sobs again.
“The best way is getting him arrested. He’ll be out of your life.”
“How, Fana? You know I’ve tried that before, a bunch of times. There has to be another way.”
“I really don’t know, even if I want to help you, I can’t until I am out of this place,” he says.
“I’m sure I can keep up with his shit for two more years, if you promise that you will help me.”
“I’ll do what I can to help you out of this situation.”
“As long as he’s still around, he won’t let me go. I ran away after I completed my degree and he tracked me down and brought me back here again.”
“Look, go home and try not to get beaten for visiting me. I hope I will see you again soon,” Fana gets up and hugs her.
“Thanks so much. I’ll see you, I promise.”
Fana goes back to his cell and starts thinking. His mission, when he gets out, is now going to be a lot easier.
