“You OK? Was thinking I’ve put you in trouble again with your Mister,” Fana says when he has settled in the driver’s seat.
“Oh I’m OK dear, nothing to worry yourself about,” Cindy says smiling at Fana.
Fana can’t help but worry. He had heard that ‘nothing to worry yourself about’ shit before. It was about a year ago when he first met Cindy. They had shared a table and immediately Fana noticed how beautiful she was. He was drawn to her and as they chatted, he wanted to know more about her.
He gave her a lift home from the library because it was dark out. But before they could reach Cindy’s flat, she stopped Fana and pointed ahead, showing him her boyfriend’s car parked outside the gate.
The following day Cindy didn’t really look like the day before, Fana noticed. She had a lot of make up on and he noticed how she struggled to sit down, like she had a broken rib or something. She had no smile, and looked rather worried and sad.
“My boyfriend asked to see you outside. Please go to him and tell him everything about yesterday,” she begged.
“Uhm, are you okay Cindy? Did I get you in trouble yesterday?”
“It’s nothing to worry yourself about. Please, let’s go.”
Fana packed his books hastily and went to meet Cindy’s bae.
In her boyfriend’s car, Fana sat in the backseat and greeted him. He looked older than Cindy, much too old.
“You brought my girlfriend home yesterday?” the man asked while looking at Cindy who was standing at a distance from the car.
“Well, yes. I did. We were studying and I decided to drop her ‘cause it was late.” Fana wasn’t so sure why the questioning was even happening.
“Oh okay my friend. Since she didn’t tell you, lemme. She doesn’t need you. I don’t ever want you giving her rides in your toy car. If you don’t want trouble, stay the fuck away from her, she’s private property.”
“I understand, sir.”
Cindy’s bae jumped and looked at himself in the mirror. “Am I that old? Noma ses’jwayelana?”
“No, no, no, I’m sorry. Was just tryna be sincere.”
“Just fucking get out of here. I hope I made myself very clear.” He turned and looked at Fana angrily.
Since that day Fana tried but he couldn’t stay away. Instead, he and Cindy became really close, but they were smart enough to hide it from Cindy’s boyfriend.
As the time went by, Cindy opened up to Fana about her relationship. She told him how abusive, cruel and heartless he really was. Nobody, not even her family, knew that she was in an abusive relationship because she was scared of her boyfriend. She reported him a number of times to the police, but he would blackmail them because he was a police officer himself. He would also threaten her to go and close the cases that she made.
In the car, Fana looks at Cindy closely, to look for any signs of being hurt. But Cindy turns away from him and looks at herself in the mirror. Without warning, Cindy pulls Fana closer and kisses the life out of him. Her friends try to separate them.
“Please you bitches, let me do this. I might never get another chance,” she gives them a dead stare and continues kissing Fana. When they have had enough, Fana starts the engine and they direct him to where the party is.
