In this essay I will elaborate on how the act of encouragement was made by Nelson Mandela and Albertina Sisulu.
An anti-apartheid activist and national co-president of the Liberal United Democratic Front 1983 Albertina Sisulu, who was elected as Deputy President in a women’s league, and also a Treasurer of Women’s league, African National Congress, South Africa Sector Government and Public Administration (1959-1990).
For more than 50 years, Sisulu committed herself to The Albertina Sisulu Foundation, which works to improve the lives of small children and old people. She was honoured for her commitment to the anti-apartheid struggle when the World Peace Council elected her president from 1993 to 1996. She recruited South African nurses to go to Tanzania to replace British who left.
The Albertina Sisulu Multipurpose Resource Centre (ASC), was also founded by Sisulu. It was founded under the auspices of the Albertina Sisulu Foundation which is a non-profit organization. She and Mandela opened Walter Sisulu Pediatric Centre for Africa in Johannesburg. The Albertina Sisulu Multipurpose Resource Centre provides a school for children, an early childhood development centre for learners from the age of three years, a section for disabilities, nutrition programme for needy learners.
In 1997, she was called before the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, established to help South Africans confront and forgive their brutal history. Sisulu testified about the Mandela United Football Club, a gang linked to Mandel’s former wife Winnie Madikizela Mandela accused of terrorizing Soweto in the 1980s.
18 July 1918 – 5 December 2013 Nelson Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary, political leader, and philanthropist who served as the president of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was the country’s first black head of state and the first elected in a fully representative democratic election.
His government focused on dismantling the legacy of Apartheid by tackling institutionalized racism and fostering racial reconciliation. Ideologically an African nationalist and socialist, he served as President of the African National Congress (ANC) party from 1991 to 1997.
Mandela proceeded on an African tour, meeting supporters and politicians in Zambia, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Libya and Algeria, and continuing to Sweden, where he was reunited with Tambo, and in London, where he appeared at the Nelson Mandela: An International Tribute for a Free South Africa concert at Wembley Stadium in Wembley Park. With the election set for 27 April 1994, the ANC began campaigning, opening 100 election offices and orchestrating People’s Forums across the country at which Mandela could appear, as a popular figure with great status among black South Africans.
Nelson Mandela is the main reason why South Africa was granted democracy and he was widely regarded as an icon of democracy and social justice. He introduced the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund which is non-profit organization, to focus on Project Georama, Disability Programme, and Efeng Bacha.
And this is reason why Albertina Sisulu and Nelson Mandela are the iconic heroes who shaped our South Africa and the world as whole.
