Take ‘Funda’ the isiXhosa word for ‘to read’ or ‘to learn’.
Add a ‘Z’ for our beautiful country: Za

That’s what FunDza is all about: getting teens and young adult South Africans reading for pleasure – and loving it!

When you read for pleasure…

  • You expand your world: “The ability to read awoke inside me some long dormant craving to be mentally alive.” (Autobiography of Malcolm X, 1964)
  • You develop empathy: “A book is the most effective weapon against intolerance and ignorance.” (Lyndon Baines Johnson)
  • You develop creativity and critical thinking: “Once you learn to read, you will be forever free.” (Frederick Douglass)
  • You boost literacy which opens the door to lifelong learning: “A capacity and taste for reading gives access to whatever has already been discovered by others.” (Abraham Lincoln)

And, you get inspired to write your own stories or poetry!

FunDza believes that all South Africans should have the opportunity to fall in love with reading with all its benefits. To read for pleasure, and to make it something you want to do every day, you need to LOVE what you’re reading, and you need to be able to access great content, easily. FunDza uses cellphone technology, and book distribution, to get readers hooked on exciting, relevant content in even the remotest parts of our country.

FunDza does this through three programmes:

Growing communities of readers: through our mobi network
If you are reading this, you have already joined FunDza’s mobi community of readers!

FunDza provides thrilling, unforgettable stories by some of South Africa’s best writers, stories that reflect readers’ lives and cater for all tastes: from romance, human drama, crime and even zombie fiction, to true life stories.

There is a growing mobi-library of great reads to enjoy. You can access this library on your cellphone and carry it with you wherever you go – reading at home, on the way to school or work, sharing reads with a friend. What’s more – you can add to the reading experience of others by commenting on the stories you read and sharing your ideas.

There is something for every reader and to keep things fresh we publish a new short story every week – a chapter per day – to keep you coming back for more!

Popularising reading
FunDza also gets great books, like the extremely popular Harmony High series, set in a fictional township high school, to reading groups, school, libraries and youth development organisations. Contact us if you would like your school or group to become a beneficiary of FunDza so that you can enjoy the books and maybe even start your own reading group.

Developing young writers
The FunDza mobi network provides opportunites for readers to become writers too. The FunDza Fanz section is dedicated to showcasing young writing talent. And, FunDza’s Write4Life workshops take this even further by developing small groups of aspirant writers to hone their skills to write for an audience. Many FunDza Fanz are already published on the FunDza Fanz page.
