Thato Ike Mokoena, was born in Mapulaneng also known as Bushbuckirdge, Mpumalanga. He attended his primary education at Barney Primary School and attended his secondary school at Ngwaritsane.
He started writing in grade 10 at the age of 16 with his academic essays and he became a critical thinker. He realised he could write when he was in grade 12 and his English teacher played a significant role in shaping his writing skills. He remembers one day when his teacher was impressed with his essay, she read it from grade 10 to grade 12. It’s a day he will never forget.
When he was in grade 12, he was in position 6 in the top 10 learners of Ngwaritsane High School in June. He then uplifted himself because he as a candidate had to be what he speak when reciting poems and giving motivational speeches. After the final year exams he was in position 3 in the top 10. He then took a gap year in 2015 because he could not find a bursary. In 2016, Thato got accepted at the University of Limpopo, where he registered Bachelor of Arts in Translation and Linguistics.
Becoming a writer was a dream come true for him, especially after he had his first poem published on a first attempt. It made him to believe more in himself. He inspires others through his speech and writing. He enjoys reading motivational poems and novels and he is looking forward to publishing one soon. He used to be a rapper and he realized that his verses were interesting when they were being read by someone else. They were indeed poems to be published.
He lives by the words of great people like Dr J Kani, N Mandela, OM Mtshali, C Themba, PTO Lumumba and J Donne.
His favourite quotes are:
“Don’t let the sadness from the past and the fear of the future, ruin the happiness of the present.”
“Difficulties break some men but make others.”
“In the university world, the rear-view mirror is always clearer than the windshield.”
