Am I the next woman to be raped?
Am I the next woman to be murdered?
Am I the next child to be attacked?
Am I the next man to turn a blind eye to abuse?
Am I the next man to hit my girlfriend?
Am I the next man to rape a girl?
It feels like there is an explosion of gender based violence in our country. But the reality is, we have the world’s highest rate for rape. Every day, a hundred women are raped – and that is only the official number from police. Every day, ten women and children are killed. Every day, three men kill their partners. Here on FunDza we have countless stories of domestic violence, rape, murder, abuse – because it is a reality of many people’s lives.
It needs to stop. We need to turn the tide, and work against the war on women. Read these stories – of despair, but also some of hope and redemption – and let us join the movement of ordinary South Africans, men and women, who are standing up and saying, “Enough.”
