Sindie

I looked so different in black, I looked so broken. My eyes were puffy probably from all the crying that I was doing yesterday.

There were no family members to sympathies with us, there were no singing and no cooking it was just us probably for the best.

Simon insisted on the kids staying behind although I was against it, I understood; Ndumiso could come and gloat, it was better this way.

I walked into the car and nodded my greeting to Simon.

“Ready?”

I nodded as I closed the door and offered nothing more, the pain was too much for me to bear I just wanted this day to end.

When I got out of the car I was surprised to see at least 5 people at the graveyard and amongst them was my mother.

I stopped on my tracks, it has been forever since I last saw my mother and never have I set my foot back in her house since the last day she kicked me out and never would I have thought that I’lll see her again let alone breath the same air.

She looked different, in a good way though. She smiled as she came to me and held my hands, I wanted to move back but I didn’t this is what I needed. I needed to heal from my past and close that chapter for good.

“You have grown so much.” She said, for the first time I could not smell any hint of alcohol in her mouth. “I heard about Ndumiso,” She said as she hung her head low in shame “I heard how he treated you, I’m sorry. I’m ashamed of my actions and how I treated you.”

“I’m glad you kicked me out.” As the words left my mouth, I realised that I meant them. “I managed to grow into the woman I am today, and besides I wouldn’t have met Shawn if I was still there.”

With too much emotions she didn’t offer much, she squeezed my hand and nodded. “Let’s go sit down.” I said as I wiped a fallen tear.
