I am black!

Not because of the colour of my skin.

But because of what is within me.

I and my ancestors are of the same cloth,

Like day and night, we shine together.

We are forever connected with each other

In the African soil.

Oh! Mother nature, why do you let your offspring

Suffer the agony imposed on them by men?

Why, Mother earth, do you, turn your back on us

In this time of need?

What do I tell the children when they ask about

The multiple graves of their brothers and sisters?

Do I tell them that they chose an early death for there were no jobs.

And how do I liberate the minds of young people

To live in the present and the future,

To have a vision,

To back think,

To learn and to listen?

I am black, and I am going, and I’m going back to my roots.
