Her heart was beating fast.
Unsure of what she was about to do.
“God will never forgive me,
neither will he.
But I have to do this.
I have no choice,” she says to herself.
Then she remembers
her mother saying,
“Everybody’s got a choice.”
‘No, Mama. You wouldn’t understand.
He deserves better than this.’
The baby wriggles in her arms.
She unwraps the blanket a little
Revealing a sweet and innocent face.
The mother’s eyes fill with tears,
As her son smiles at her;
Clearly oblivious
To what was about to happen.
“One day you will understand
Why I had to do this.
A fatherless kid and
A prostitute for a mother
Is not what I wanted for you.”
She is now outside the gate.
‘Reneilwe Orphanage’ is the name.
She reaches the door.
It is time!
A part of her doesn’t want to let go.
“I am doing this for you.”
She puts the baby down gently,
Knocks on the door and hides.
A woman opens the door
Sees the baby on the floor
And picks him up.
The baby lets out a piercing cry
Clearly crying for his mother.
The mother in the dark is crying,
Full of regrets.
Without any doubt,
Her child’s cries will haunt her
For life.
