day of the year thus far.

Downtown Jozi was just over the horizon

when the tar suddenly appeared to be wet,

in winter.

Along the M2,

embankments are covered in patches

of snow like the hide of an Ayrshire Cow.

Tiny snow flakes bounce off the

windscreen as I drive through a rare


The last time it snowed in Johannesburg,

2012, it signaled a milestone and

the beginning of a decade-long

chapter in my life.

I wonder what news the miraculous

change in weather brings this time.

At least tonight’s news reports will be

dominated by scenes of falling snow

and smiling little faces,

and not the current sad state of affairs.
