NTINI ACTS AFTER CHILD DEATH

Sindi Khumalo’s death sees Mayor order immediate road safety measures

After another death on the busy road outside Botshabelo School, Mayor Fezile Ntini has ordered swift action. Young Sindi Khumalo (10) was killed when a driver hit her as she used the pedestrian crossing last Wednesday. She is the third child to be killed in just two years. The driver, Mr Moegsien Williams (24), has been charged with culpable homicide.

The Mayor has ordered speed bumps for the road, proper pavements, and railings to protect the school gate from the road. She told the school to hire a ‘lollipop’ person to control the pedestrian crossing.

Head teacher Mrs Mavis Jara said, “We are heartbroken at the loss of one of our children, yet again. There have been many promises to improve road safety for our kids. This time, I hope we really will see action. But, we will wait and see.”

The School Governing Body has agreed to pay for the crossing guard, who will be trained by the Department of Road Safety.
