Xtreme Football Club
Xander Labuschagne had a typical Afrikaans rugby upbringing, with no previous knowledge or even interest in soccer. Yet he recognised a need in his community when he realised that there was no substantial under-20 soccer team in Vaalwater. He wanted to help grow his community, and especially the youth, so he started the Xtreme Football Club. His vision constantly reached new heights. He and his wife bought a B&B in town and converted it into an academy for the XFC players. This has been a stepping stone for the players and some have gone on to university and careers in soccer. When I was there it was school holidays and the kids were home with their families. Xander told me that a large number of the soccer players were coming back to facilitate free soccer workshops with the kids. They are investing in their community, giving back what they have received.
