My parents are arguing, but I’m trying not to listen. Instead, I’ve got paper spread out across the kitchen table as I draw my newest supervillain, Big Ollie-Drum, who may or may not bear a striking resemblance to Mr Visser.

Big Ollie-Drum doesn’t have a penis, but is man. Hey, transgender people are like anybody else; some are nice, and some can be mean. Big Ollie-Drum is as evil as they come. He is one of the polluting giants from Earth and he wants to spread his toxic waste on planet Chlorophyll. The green planet has many natural resources and Big Ollie-Drum wants them, in order to make himself even richer.

Zimbali Jadeite is like me, a girl with a penis. And she’s going to wipe the floor with Big Ollie-Drum – kapow! – as she protects planet Chlorophyll. She can fly and create oxygen. She’s super intelligent and crazy-strong. But best of all, she can communicate with plants, no matter where she is, be it Earth, Chlorophyll, or a totally different universe. When Zimbali Jadeite starts singing, plants will do anything she asks of them, because they trust her. Feeding off her super powers, plants find themselves able to do things they never did before, like being able to walk, or use their branches as limbs.

I love Zimbali Jadeite. Out of all the characters I’ve created, she is my favourite. The woman can save an entire planet, yet still has time to sing and dance her worries away. Of course, Zimbali Jadeite has green skin, like any other human born on Chlorophyll. I’ve also given her vibrant, electric-purple hair with one wide blue streak. She wears her hair in a variety of styles, including an Afro, cornrows, or a blaze of tiny electric purple braids. Her sparkly nail polish changes colours, depending on my mood, but often it’s the same shade of blue as the streak in her hair.

Zimbali Jadeite, however, does not fight in high-heeled boots, like some other women superheroes. Because Zimbali Jadeite knows that is as silly as making your superhero fly around in an invisible aeroplane. But that doesn’t mean she can’t have a wicked shoe collection. I love designing shoes for her to fight in. A woman can be practical and still look great, you know.

I get a lot my ideas for Zimbali Jadeite’s wardrobe from Pinterest and Teen Vogue. I am a firm believer that fashion should never kill you. So I’m careful not to draw her in long scarves that might choke her, or billowy capes that could get snagged on something. One of Zimbali Jadeite’s favourite things to wear are skirts with built in shorts. These are great whether she is dancing on the street, or flying through the air.

I’m pretty fond of those skirts, myself.

But before I’m finished storyboarding my first sequence between Big Ollie-Drum and Zimbali Jadeite, Tata comes and sits down beside me at the table.
