Karabo hung up the phone. DT really had changed; the old DT would never have been able to start his own business. He was serious about life now, and she was happy for him.

She instinctively reached into her handbag to look at the photo of herself and DT that she still kept in her wallet. She opened the wallet, and at first thought she had it backwards. She turned it around and realised she’d had it right the first time. She looked in her bag, digging around, wondering what could have happened. She had never removed that photo, but the photo was gone.

She sat back in her chair and tried to think of who might have taken it out, who had had access to her handbag. She was surprised how upset she was, surprised to realise how much that photo had meant to her.

“Is something wrong?”

It was Mompati. She hadn’t seen him since they parted the night before. He had been gone all morning; no-one seemed to know where. Maybe he slept in after them being out so late; attorneys at the firm had such privileges.

“Hey Mompati. I … you … I mean … I had fun last night. Thanks for inviting me.” Why was she suddenly so nervous? Karabo took a deep breath to calm her nerves. Was she falling for this guy?

He sat down on the desk next to her. He was wearing a black suit with a pink shirt, a look that worked perfectly on him. “You looked upset. What’s going on Karabo?”

She shook her head. “It’s just been such a crazy day so far. First, that neighbour we were talking about last night, the racist one? This morning an ambulance was at his house taking him away – someone beat him up.”

“Wow, that’s a coincidence since last night Marea said she hoped someone would do just that.”

“Yeah, that’s what I thought. And now … well it’s nothing really …”

“What? Tell me.” Mompati took her hand in his. She wasn’t sure she didn’t like that.

“A photo, I kept it in my wallet, it’s been there forever … it’s gone. It just meant a lot to me and I don’t know what could have happened to it.”

“A photo? Of who?”

“My ex.”

“Oh.” He let go of her hand.

“No, it’s not like that – at all. It’s over. It was just a photo from a time … at my sister’s wedding actually. It’s nothing. I don’t know why I’m so upset.”

“Well, maybe I can improve your day. How about I take you to lunch? I made reservations at Chez Michelle. I was supposed to meet a client but they backed out. Are you up for some fancy dining?”

“Sounds great. Let me just tell Mr Kerbie.”

“No need. It’s done. I told him we would go for a long lunch to work on one of my cases that I need your help on.”

Karabo closed her handbag and stood up. “Great, let’s go!”
