As Katlego walks out, I know that it is very likely that that is the last time I will see him.

Moses is back and he wants me back, it is obvious. And there is no competing with Moses. The gods too want us together again – why else would they orchestrate this entire catastrophe? It was an accident of course, but one that was planned from the heavens. Moses is my soul mate, and the universe is in agreement.

Happy with my recovery, Moses discharges me the next afternoon, and he takes me home when his shift ends. Then he comes to see me every day while I am off work convalescing and we speak and speak. It feels like being back home, like my soul is back home.

Four days after the blast, Moses arrives in the evening and Ma invites him to stay for dinner.

Afterwards, with no warning, he begins: “Mama, thank you for raising this amazing woman. If she would have me, I would appreciate your blessing to marry her.”

Ma gasps in a quick breath of air and cries tears of joy, before managing to reply. “Absolutely son, you have my blessings.” She feels that God has answered her prayers.

He turns to me, sitting on the couch next to him, transfixed at his words.

“Gcina Nxumalo, I don’t have a ring right now but will you please, tonight, make me the happiest man alive? Will you say that you will marry me and become Mrs Gcina Mashale?”

Now I am crying, the tears tumbling down my face.

“Yes Moses, I will be your wife.”

“My Queen, I will never let go of you again. I promise.”

“Okay … Dr Magic,” I say.

“Wow, not you too hey!”

We laugh and hug. Ma can’t resist and jumps up and hugs us too.

I realise then that this is it. This is the dream, the one where Moses’ late mother had told me that Moses would one-day marry me. The mother’s blessing – this is it.
