“Miller?” I asked. “Detective Miller?”

Jakes laughed scornfully. “Jakes has spies everywhere. The police station is one such place. How else do you think Jakes set up that stupid Sergeant Smith?”

I was flabbergasted. I should have known Detective Idiot was a bad guy.

Just as Jakes was about to open his mouth again, we all heard a massive crash outside. Next thing we knew, people came storming in, guns at the ready: Violet, Jones, Dash – and someone who looked so like me she could have been my twin.

This must be the famous Ketsu! It was almost like she was a reflection of me. Except that her hair was pin straight and mine was always curly.

The thugs weren’t going to go down without a fight, and they knew they wouldn’t be shot dead – they were wanted in court for the drugs case. They charged at the drug squad members.

That’s when I saw another way Ketsu and I were different: she could fight like crazy. I gaped in awe as she used her martial arts skills to take down one of Jakes’ guys twice her size.

Jones rushed over and loosened my ties while Ketsu, Violet and Dash were in the fray, taking down henchmen like it was going out of style. Seeing Dash in action made my feelings toward him surge!

There was no way I could marry Lungile now. Not when I felt this way about someone else.

I was freed just as Ketsu got to Jakes. She punched and then drop kicked him, and I was hysterically cheering her on. Then he landed a kick in her stomach and she doubled over in pain.

Dash sprinted over and dived at Jakes, pinning him to the ground, whipping out a cable tie and cuffing him. Once his henchmen saw that he was down, they fled, pursued by Violet and Jones. Some backup they were. We soon heard shots.

Tingling with adrenaline, I went over to Ketsu to check if she was alright.

“Whoa,” she said. “It’s like looking in a mirror from an alternate universe.”
I laughed. This had been a crazy time and this just fitted the bill.

“What a way to meet my doppelgänger,” I said.

What a way indeed.

Within minutes a swarm of backup police officers were on site at the club.

“I’m just so relieved that it’s all over,” Ketsu said, as we all relaxed. “Now I can relocate and start afresh somewhere far away, with Tommy.”

“But we still haven’t found out who Codex is. Or retrieved the stolen goods,” Violet said.

“Don’t worry, we’ll find them soon enough,” Jones said.

And then it clicked. Like in the movies when the main guy suddenly gets an idea. This was my moment. It would have given Veronica Mars a run for her money.

They were looking for the wrong thing the whole time. Codex was important and really was the key. But a different kind of key …
