Odwa took a while to open the door.
“I honestly didn’t think you were going to come,” he said as a way of greeting, peering around the door.
“Hi Odwa,” Masego said nervously. “Can I come in?”
“Bad, bad manners. I apologise,” Odwa said, opening the door wider and motioning for Masego to enter.
“What do you want to drink?” he asked.
“Just water for now, thanks,” Masego said, sitting down on the sofa opposite the TV.
While Odwa went into the kitchen, Masego had a look around. The house was clean, but didn’t smell of detergent, like her house. There was a dinner table at the far end of the room with flowers in a yellow vase. The TV was a big Samsung wide-screen and hung above it was a picture of a woman with her arm around a young girl. She guessed it was Odwa’s aunt and cousin. Next to the TV table there was a bookshelf and on the top row was a collection of encyclopaedias. Below there were brightly-coloured children’s books and a few novels. At her house the books in the bookshelf were mainly interpretations of The Bible and other religious texts.
Odwa came out with two glasses of water and placed them on the coasters on the table.
“So, what do you want to watch?” he asked, putting the USB down next to the TV.
“Um, maybe a romantic comedy … or we could watch a series?”
“Sure,” Odwa said, taking a seat next to her.
“Wait, can we close the curtains, to make like a cinema?” Masego asked.
Odwa stood up and closed the curtains. Then he bent down to kiss Masego lightly on the lips.
“Let’s watch the movie,” Masego said, crossing her legs.
Odwa sat down next to her. The feel of his leg against hers made her skin tingle. She wondered if he felt the same thrill. He reached out and held her hand.
The movie started and Masego tried hard to concentrate, anticipating that he would want to go further than just holding hands. To her disappointment, he didn’t seem to have any other intentions. They watched in silence, holding hands.
“That was great,” Odwa said, standing up as the credits rolled. “But it’s made me thirsty. I’ll go get us a drink.”
“This might not happen today …” Masego thought of Malebo’s words. It seemed that Odwa didn’t want to do anything more than just hang out.
He came back with two glasses of cola and placed them on the table. Then he turned towards Masego and pulled her towards him, searching for her lips. Aah, it just might happen today, Masego thought to herself, savouring every moment of their long kiss.
As they drew apart, she looked down shyly. “Odwa,” she said, “I’ve never made love to anyone before.”
“Do you want me to be your first?” he asked.
Masego nodded and brought out the packet of condoms Malebo had given her.
“Wow!” was all Odwa could say.
“Is that a good thing or a bad thing?” Masego asked, suddenly shy.
“Let’s go to my bedroom,” he said, taking her by the hand and leading the way.
He closed the door behind them, then carefully removed her dress and his jeans and T-shirt.
“Are you sure you want to do this with me? Today?” Odwa asked.
“I’m starting to think that you don’t want to take things further,” Masego said.
“I’m just making sure,” Odwa said as he reached for the condoms.

Masego put on her clothes and sat down at the end of the bed.
“Dear Lord,” she said anxiously, “please forgive me.”
“Hey,” Odwa interrupted her. “I thought you wanted this.”
“I wanted it, but it doesn’t make it less of a sin,” Masego said.
“Don’t be so hard on yourself, Masego. We had a good time. Let’s do it again. Nothing to lose now,” Odwa teased.
Masego looked shocked, but then she laughed. She forgot all about the prayer and took her dress off again.
After they’d made love for the second time, she checked her phone, which she’d put on silent. There were six missed calls from Malebo.
Are you OK, Sego? Answer my calls.
She checked the time. It was 13:17. “Odwa, I have to go!” she exclaimed, jumping up to get dressed and put on her shoes.
Odwa followed her out of the bedroom. “That was amazing, babe,” he said, planting one last kiss on her lips.
“It was great for me too, Odwa,” Masego said, feeling the butterflies flutter through her stomach. When Odwa opened the door, Malebo was waiting outside, clearly panicking. The girls walked away, in a hurry.
“I can see that smile Zee,” Malebo said, taking Masego’s hand.
“Which smile?” Masego asked and the butterflies hit again.
“The ‘I’ve done the deed and now I’m boy crazy’ smile,” Malebo said, stopping. “How was it?”
Before Masego could say anything, the butterflies hit again, more intensely this time and she held her stomach.
“That good huh?” Malebo asked, remembering her first time with Boikago.
“Oh Male, it was so good,” Masego said and took Malebo’s hand. The two girls ran towards Malebo’s house, lighter than the wind.
