Wonanji Phiri was the only foreign student in a township school when the 2008 xenophobic attacks spread across South Africa. They threatened her family and turned her world upside down. This is the true story of Wonanji’s search for a place that she can call home. It is a story of courage, friendship and belonging.
This is a true story but some names have been changed to protect the identities of individuals mentioned.
Thank you to the UNHCR for sponsoring this story, which has been brought to you on World Refugee Day, 20 June 2014.
