I am pretty sure that I’m friends with a crazy guy. I had always thought of him as the guy who simply walks up to a chick and introduces himself without making a fuss about it. But since hearing the story he recently told me, I now know that he’s no longer that kind of guy. You’re probably wondering what this supposedly normal friend of mine did for me to think he’s gone crazy.

Well, let me tell you this: it’s something super-weird!

He told me that three months ago he was sitting at the Unibell Station, feeling depressed about his non-existent love life, when “an angel” suddenly walked into the station and gave him a new surge of hope. She was apparently so beautiful that he didn’t care that she was with two other girls – all he could think about was how nice it would be to talk to her and maybe even start dating her. He told me, then, that without even thinking about it too much, he pressed the answer button on his earphones and started pretending to have a deep conversation on the phone with someone.

When I asked him what exactly he said, he gave me a demonstration. He put on a serious face and, as if he really was talking to someone on the phone, said: “I’m sick and tired of love, bra, because nice guys never get the girls they like, while the bad boys each have ten girls. On Valentine’s Day last year, for example, I told a girl I had started dating that ‘I adore her’ but I just got a huge rejection. She told me I was ‘too nice’, man! Like, what the hell does that mean?”

I was totally blown away. This guy actually made a fake phone speech! The real miracle in the story, though, is that this fake phone call caught the attention of the ‘angel’.

She went up to him after he then ‘dropped the phone’ and introduced herself – just like that!

The rest of the story is simple: these two began dating two months later and the love-birds are now about to celebrate their one-month anniversary.

Looking at his story, I think we can definitely all agree that it had a happy ending.

But it also got me thinking about all the people out there that have done crazy (and maybe even super-weird) things to get the attention of a guy or girl they liked, or the attention of a group of friends that they wanted to join. Basically, I’m pretty sure that my friend is not the only one out there who’s gone crazy – we’ve probably all done it at some point.

This is, then, where the real questions come up. For example, what if you felt you had to do something that everyone knows is wrong, such as bunking school, just to show the girl or guy you like that you’re a maverick (or, as most of us would say: a rule-breaker)? What if you convinced yourself you needed to jump out of a moving train just to show the guys that you aren’t afraid of a little danger? What if you felt you had to say hurtful things to someone just to show that you also know how to make jokes?

Would you do those things, just to get those people’s attention?

Before doing anything you might regret, it wouldn’t hurt to first ask yourself about the price that you’re willing to pay to get attention. Be careful of throwing away your true self just to get someone else to notice you. That person might only be interested in you because of what you did to get their attention, and not because of who you really are.

#ChatBack: That, then, brings me to two questions for you. Firstly, what crazy things have you or your friends done to get attention? Secondly, what do you think about the stuff I’ve said?
