Growing up in a Christian family, my access to jewellery was limited to a simple watch. I didn’t complain much about it because that’s what I knew to be acceptable for a young girl to wear. I was told that the next jewellery I would own would be my wedding band. When I started high school the idea that I would only wear a watch and someday a wedding band irritated me a lot. Because I saw my friends wearing all those fancy necklaces, rings and earrings, I felt out of place most of the time. But as years went by and I discovered my love for fashion, I realized that there is more to accessorize than I thought. So this week I am going to share with you some of the things I learnt but wish I knew sooner.

When you first think of accessories, you think of rings, necklaces, earrings, and watches. But these days the word ‘accessories’ ranges from hand bags, cell phone covers, wallets, belts, scarfs and many more. And looking good is not just about wearing a fancy dress, but about the complete look which includes accessories. Gone are the days when putting on a pair of jean and t-shirt was good enough, now you’ve got to make sure your shoes are on point, your belt is genuine leather and your hand accessories match up as well as a good jacket (for men) to complete the look.

Tip 1: Scarf

What I found useful to do growing up and even today with my limited access to accessories, is to always add a scarf to complete the look. Scarfs for me are a must in any wardrobe and are not limited to just women fashion. I always found that wearing a scarf not only changed my look completely, but that it also added a new element and a new beauty.

Tip 2: Handbags

Another thing that I found useful then and now is a good handbag. I think that a well-designed and quality handbag always made me look so much more ‘put together’ than any ring could. When buying a bag, you need to know that quality is always going to work better for you than quantity. Because a good bag will last you a long time. And also remember that colour plays a role, so invest in browns and blacks for everyday use and then add colours like red, purple, olive or silver for colour blocking.

Tip 4: Rings and Necklaces

When it comes to necklaces and rings, you need to be more aware of what look you are going for before you just put them on, unless it’s your wedding band. So try as much as possible not to wear too many neck pieces at once or make sure that they can work together. Same goes for the rings; wearing too many can look trashy, also wearing too many in different styles can also work against you. So try and have a maximum of three on one hand and also that they can somehow relate to each other, instead of stand-alone.

Tip 5: Watch

A good watch is a staple in any wardrobe. I always say you can tell a lot about a man by the watch he wears; so gents, get yourself a good one. It brings character to any outfit and one online article called it “an indispensable fashion accessory”. So it’s a must and not just for time keeping, but for the overall look of your outfit.

I hope that you found these tips useful, and don’t be shy to play around with accessories. Just remember to use them in moderation and make them work for your look. #KeepItTrendi
