A lot of people have been anxiously awaiting the movie The Shack to go along with the book of the same title by William P. Young. I usually don’t read books once I’ve seen the trailer for its movie, but for this one I made an exception. I figured it had to be good since it is now considered one of the most successful books ever published, and has sold over 20 million copies worldwide.

The movie was pretty good. I rarely find myself sitting in a movie thinking, “Hey this is pretty good compared to the book,” but there I was thinking just that. The storyline followed the book almost exactly. Very few extra lines or jokes were added, and they weren’t really necessary since the book had plenty of quirky one-liners in it to begin with.

But then it happened. We get to the end of the movie, right to where one of my favorite scenes in the entire book took place – and it was COMPLETELY left out. They didn’t just cut most of it and allude to a major part of the book. They simply left it out of the story. Now the movie was getting pretty long, and I was getting a bit tired, but this scene was a huge lesson in forgiveness that really brought the whole book full circle and drove the message home. They were doing a great job up until that point, but in the end I left thinking, “The book was better” – as always.

P.S. I highly recommend the book for anyone who in interested on seeing religion from a very different perspective. If you don’t really enjoy religion then this book probably won’t interest you at all.
