This month we celebrated Workers’ Day on the 1st of May, and I thought it would be great to focus all of this month’s blogs on giving you advice on choosing careers, getting ready for the job interviews and much more. So if you need any help relating to this month’s theme, feel free to leave your comments below and if you feel there is a topic you want more information on then please let us know as well.

So to kick off with the Workers’ Day theme, this week we focus on choosing the right career for you. I will be sharing with you a few tips that can help you make the best possible career choice for yourself. I know how frustrating it can be to wake up one morning and realise that what you are doing is not what you love, or that you made the wrong career choice when you went to university and would prefer to do something different.

Career aptitude tests

Ever heard of career aptitude tests? Well, these are tests which you can do online that ask you specific questions to better determine which career would best suit you. I think that it’s great to do these tests and don’t just do one and think that it is the career you should be doing, do lots because they are free and some of them start to form a pattern. Basically you start to notice common results and also some of them do try and describe your personality which is sometimes accurate, well for me I find. So, give them a go and see what results you get, it might just bring you a step closer to the career of your dreams.

Do you really need a career change?

Sometimes we claim to want a career change when all we need is to actually change our job environment. Just because the people you are currently working with are treating you terribly, it doesn’t mean that the career you’re in is not for you. So before you make the big decision to completely change the career you’re in, try first changing your current job environment. But if you do find yourself bored, stressed and generally not liking what you are doing then maybe a career change is necessary for you.

Be specific about your end goals

If you have decided that a career change is what you truly need then it is time to fully assess yourself. Before you decided on a new career first evaluate yourself and ask yourself some of these questions.

  • What do you enjoy doing? (Make a list of all the things that you love doing)
  • What skills do you use when doing those things? (If you enjoy driving fast cars, you probably need to know how to drive first, right?)
  • What are you good at doing? (Are you artistic or are you more number orientated, i.e. Accountant, Mathematic)
  • Ask your friends or family members what they like/admire about you.
  • Also, what things are you most good at? (find qualities that you are very good at, also like an expect, which people are always complimenting you on)
  • You are welcome to add more questions that you think are appropriate for you to get the best results possible. Once you are done answering the questions, your future career should feel less foggy.

    Set the motion

You have done the career aptitude tests, you have seen that you really do need a change from your current career, you have evaluated yourself, and now you want to name it. This is where you really have to make sure that you are making the right moves.

If you look at your personality test and realise that you actually like working with people and love teaching, then maybe becoming an educator is for you. But you need to go a step further and ask yourself, if becoming some type of an educator is what you want to do, then for which level (high school, primary school, pre-school), or perhaps you want to work with adults and teach them life skills. It is very important to do some research into the career you think will work for you before you decide to do them.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions about the career you are thinking of doing. I hope you found this blog useful and if you feel that there is something that I missed, please share below and let others know. #StayCareerSmart
