Do you ever wake up in the morning, stand in front of your closet, staring at everything for almost 30 minutes, and end up feeling depressed because you can’t pick an outfit for the day?

Well that is me almost every morning. I have always struggled with this issue because I am the kind of person who likes to dress according to the mood I am in. And I always refuse to pick clothes the night before as I wouldn’t know how I will feel in the morning. Silly concept, I know 🙂

My sister is always telling me to pick things the night before so that I stop feeling frustrated in the mornings – but I still do it. It’s crazy because if I do have an important meeting to attend or an important function, then I pick out stuff the night before. I guess it’s a mind-set thing.

But I refuse to keep waking up 30 minutes to an hour before time, so that I can stare at my closet and still battle to choose something. So I have researched about this issue and have finally found tips that I can use. Some of them I have actually tried and they worked, so I hope this works for you also if you’re struggling like have.

Tip 1: Organize your wardrobe

I cannot tell you how much I find this to be so useful. I used to wash my clothes then just throw them in the wardrobe and never really cared to fold, sort, pack and colour coordinate them. But since discovering this tip, my life has changed for the better. You don’t even have to colour coordinate, your organizing can just be as simple as putting T-shirts on their own, skirts and dresses on their own and pants separate. This will help you so much in the morning to just pick and match what you want without having to dig through a pile of stuff.

Tip 2: Style around basics

If you struggle to find the right pieces and put together, I advise that you start using the basics in your wardrobe. When I say ‘basics’ I don’t mean that gorgeous dress you have reserved for a fabulous function, I mean your tees, jeans, and jackets. Just spice them up by adding certain accessories or scarfs.

Tip 3: Prepare in advance

OK, I know not many people like this idea and we all want to let tomorrow worry about itself (as the Bible says), but let me tell you if you can do this tip and really master it, then skip the rest of this blog. Preparing in advance is one of the best things you can do for yourself and if you can do it a week ahead, then not even Eskom’s load shedding can stop you looking good all week long. You can iron and pack things for the week on Sunday. There are days in the week that you will feel like the outfit chosen isn’t suitable for the occasion or the weather, but just switch the days’ outfits or pick something for that specific event, then carry on with the rest of the week. This tip will never fail you and will always get you to places on time and you can say “bye-bye” to morning blues.

Tip 4: Document the outfits (look book theory)

You’re still reading? Well, if preparing in advance isn’t really your thing, then I have something even better for you. Document yourself whenever you have on an outfit that makes you feel good. Take pictures and save them on your phone, Facebook them, Instagram them, however else you want to store them. When you feel low and uninspired by your wardrobe, then go back to those pictures or ‘look book’ and choose something. Sure people on Facebook might have seen that outfit, but your neighbour or work friends haven’t and who cares anyways, if you looked good, why hide it!

Tip 5: Style around 1 piece

So you wake up in the morning and feel you really want to wear those brand new boots or that new scarf, or you just want to use your designer bag. You can style yourself by beginning with that item and then find things in your wardrobe that work with it. Don’t feel depressed if you wake up and don’t have the whole outfit in mind yet, you can slowly develop that look by just using one piece of item in your closet.

I hope that these tips have been useful to you and if you have more, then please share them with us.
