I want to talk about a topic that I find most people struggle with and that is ‘being confident’ in themselves. I think that being confident in who you are requires you to know yourself, meaning everything that makes you who you are and accepting it. You can’t be confident if you are not ready to accept yourself, i.e. your weaknesses, strengths, values, morals and everything in-between.

People always say ‘What’s the worst that could happen?’ but I think that if you are not already confident in yourself then a lot worse could definitely happen. You need to know your limits, i.e. what you can and cannot stand. Being confident requires you to push the boundaries and stand tall even when others try to put you down using your weaknesses. So it’s not enough to just say you are confident, you need to actually believe that you are and you will be.

You need to evaluate yourself, your future goals and plans; you need to understand yourself. Confidence is not just about how you talk, you should show confidence in how you walk, talk, it should form part of your essence. People should be able to look at you and know that you are not to be messed with. Confidence is a way of being.

Confidence requires you to use your imagination. Ever heard people say when faced in situation that make them uncomfortable (perhaps on the phone with a stranger or giving a speech in a room full of people) to ‘Imagine them naked’. It doesn’t always mean that you imagine the people naked, but rather use your imagination to see the people you are currently facing in a way that they look less scary and more approachable to you. Your imagination can help you build your confidence or diminish it, so it is up to you how you use it.

These are some basic practical things that you can do to immediately boost your confidence.

  • Dress in clothes that make you feel confident
  • Walk with a straight back and your chin up (don’t walk facing down and looking like you’re sulking).
  • Read or listen to motivational things that will inspire you to feel good about yourself.
  • Tell yourself daily that you are important (Self-motivation).
  • Realise that you can’t always control situations, but that you can make the most of it regardless.
  • Learn to socialise one on one with people (not only on social media).
  • Stop looking at your failures as failures; rather see them as an opportunity to improve.
  • Find a role model who has the kind of confidence you want and model them.
  • These are just a few tips that will have you walking and talking confidently in no time. Don’t give up on yourself and always improve yourself because there is only one you; why not be the best version of yourself. #BeConfident
