This is the time of year where no teenager wants to hang around with their parents because their parents are ‘uncool’. Sounds familiar, doesn’t it? I’ve been there myself. It’s difficult for parents to communicate with someone whose only concern is the opposite sex, books, clothes and friends. It’s even more difficult to find them things to do and to keep them busy during their December holiday that are ‘fun’. I’ve done some research and reviews and guess what I found, there are so many activities and places that are teen inclusive and that offer the right sort of adventure, enjoyment and fun for teens/young adults.

If you’re in Cape Town here are places you could go to:

  • Gary’s Surf School is great for those who’d like to learn how to surf or swim and still have fun in the sea while doing it. Their prices are reasonable and for anyone living within reach of a train station, they can take a train to 34 Balmoral Building in Beach Road, Muizenberg which is literally at the foot of the sea to indulge in water adventure.
  • Grandwest Casino and Entertainment World, Not for gambling but they have an awesome gaming arcade that offers games for toddlers, teens and adults. My point is there will be a game or games that take your fancy and it’s close to public transport as well, just behind the Goodwood train station. Not forgetting the ice skating ring, whereby they offer skating lessons. The Ice Station is host to the Western Province Ice Hockey Association. The WPIHA has five member clubs and always welcome new beginners. Price: R49 – R54The Springbok Experience Rugby Museum- This state-of-the-art, double-storey museum on the V&A Waterfront is a veritable utopia for sport-loving grownups and young’uns. For those who love rugby, the Springbok museum is the place to visit. The upstairs area, which tells the story of the evolution of rugby through a series of interactive digital displays and an assortment of iconic artefacts. This multimedia play place invites children (and adults) to try out a range of Wii-like kicking, passing, fitness and reaction tests, and players even get live feedback from a virtual coach. Price: too, scholars pay only R30p/p online or R40p/p at the ticket office and adults are charged R50p/p online or R65p/p at the office; families of four can enjoy a discounted rate of R150 (online) or R180 (office) in total.
  • Swim at the Sea Point Pool or the Long Street Baths, trust me, you’re going to want to keep cool this holiday for next to nothing. The spectacular outdoor Sea Point Pavilion, which overlooks the glistening Atlantic Ocean, or the indoor Long Street Baths, is one such good place to go take a swim or a dive with either a group of friends or family. Price: Sea Point Swimming Pool: R10 for kids and R20 for adults; Long Street Baths: R1.50 for children and R5.50 for adults.
  • Explore the abandoned zoo at Rhodes Memorial. If you have a sense of adventure and want to imagine yourself as an Indiana Jones/Jack Sparrow or Dr. Irina Spalko/Elizabeth Swann or historian to be, out searching for treasure or just out exploring and being in touch with nature, the zoo is a good place to start. This establishment was formally known as the Groote Schuur Zoo. It used to be a very popular attraction in its day and was free of charge to the public. The most attractive feature of the zoo today is the Lion’s Den, which can still be clearly seen. Cost: FREE
