If you are not seriously ill, and just need a pep-me-up, why don’t you try the natural route.

It is often the first port of call for many because it’s usually cost-effective, and most of the time the ingredients can be found in your kitchen.

Natural Immune Boosters

When I get sick, I try and forego the medication and go with some lemon, honey and olive oil. There is usually be a jar already made and I’d take a tablespoon three times a day. It really helps with a cough and phlegm.

  • Lemon, honey and olive oil

How to make it: Cut up half a lemon, then squeeze out the juice, adding one tablespoon of honey and two tablespoons of olive oil. Mix well and place in a glass jar in the fridge.

According to Healthline, olive oil contains vitamins E and K. It also contains polyphenols which contain many health benefits.

  • Lemon, ginger and honey

Another evidence-based article by Healthline,  explored the benefits of lemon, ginger and honey. “The steam generated from your hot lemon-ginger infusion may help open up your nasal cavities — helping clear a stuffy nose. Drinking something warm also soothes a throat sore from mucus buildup.”

How to make it: Cut the lemon in half, squeeze half a lemon into a cup, then add one teaspoon of honey, two slices of fresh ginger and hot water. Stir well and enjoy.

  • Gargling throat with salt water

Gargling with salt helps with a sore or scratchy throat. According to Healthline, “Salt has been scientifically proven to help draw water out of oral tissues, while creating a salt barrier that locks out water and harmful pathogens from getting back inside. This makes salt water gargles valuable for blocking viruses and bacteria, reducing the chance of infections in the mouth and throat, and relieving inflammation in certain cases.”

How to make it: Half a cup of luke-warm water, one tablespoon of salt and stir. If you need more salt or water, then add what you may think is appropriate.

Please note that the natural remedies above won’t necessarily cure you of your cold or flu but they may alleviate some of your congestion or the irritation of a scratchy throat.
