As kids we enjoyed toffee apples during summer and they were sticky and delicious. These childish delights are easy to make and here is a simple recipe for you to make your own.

Here is what you will need:
Stove, 2 baking trays, deep saucepan, wooden spoon, a cup to measure 250ml, teaspoon,

Ingredients:
• 16 wooden sticks (you can use kebab sticks or suckers sticks)
• 16 medium sized red apples, washed and dried
• 4 x 250 ml white sugar
• 250 ml water (1 cup)
• ½ teaspoon cream of tartar
• 2 teaspoons red liquid food colouring

Method:

Step 1:
Push a stick into each apple. It’s easiest to push it through the bottom part where the core is.

Step 2:
Line two baking trays with baking paper.

Step 3:
Heat the sugar and water in a heavy-bottomed saucepan over low heat. Simmer, stirring continuously, until the sugar has completely dissolved. Stop stirring and increase heat until syrup boils.

Step 4:
Using a wet brush or cloth, brush or wipe away any sugar crystals that have stuck to the sides of the saucepan above the syrup level. Please be careful.

Step 5:
Stir in the cream of tartar and food colouring. Reduce heat to low.

Step 6:
Simmer the toffee for 20 minutes or until it reaches hard, cracking stage.

Hint: To check if it has reached this stage, add 1 teaspoon of toffee to a glass of ice-cold water. Remove solidified toffee from the cold water and bend it. The toffee should crack easily and not bend or feel sticky. Once toffee is at this stage remove from heat immediately.

Step 7:
Wait until toffee stops bubbling then dip one apple into the toffee. Tip the pan at an angle to coat it completely, especially around the base of the stick.

Step 8:
Place coated toffee apple onto the prepared baking tray.

Step 9:
Repeat with remaining apples and leave to set at room temperature.

Step 10:
Enjoy 🙂

Makes 16 toffee apples
Hint: When cold, wrap each toffee apple in cellophane plastic and tie with a bow.
