Here are links to organisations where you can find out more about freedom of expression. The general link at the end of the list takes you to other useful sites, like Section 27.
Freedom of Expression Institute – fxi.org.za
This independent organisation was set up to make sure that there is freedom of expression in South Africa, and that all citizens can get and spread information and knowledge. It takes up cases of censorship of the media by government for example.
Restorative Justice Centre – www.rjc.co.za
This organisation “emphasises repairing the harm and hurt associated with criminal behaviour.” It helps victims and tries to get offenders to acknowledge what they have done and seek forgiveness. “Restorative justice aims to bring restoration and healing, as opposed to blame and retribution.”
Right2Know – www.r2k.org.za
This coalition of organisations started in 2010 to campaign against parts of the proposed Protection of State Information Bill (the Secrecy Bill), which they say will prevent the free flow of information. Now they monitor freedom of information issues and run four linked campaigns: Stop Secrecy, InfoAccessNow, Media freedom for All, and Justice for Whistleblowers. (A whistleblower is a person who makes corrupt actions public.)
Broadcasting Complaints Commission – www.bccsa.co.za
The BCCA is an independent judicial tribunal that looks into complaints from the public about members of the National Association of Broadcasters, and rules on them. It can fine members. It makes rulings in line with the Constitution and our laws.
Corruption Watch – www.corruptionwatch.org.za
This organisation is a place where anyone can report any corruption they see and it will be investigated and reported on. In this way they want to fight corruption and make leaders take responsibility for their actions.
The South African Human Rights Commission – www.sahrc.org.za
These Commissioners are appointed by Parliament and their task is to get all South Africans to respect and observe human rights, and to investigate, report on and take steps to stop human rights violations (people not getting their rights) and get help for victims.
