Everything in the house reminded him of her. Everything he did reminded him of her, even when he could not find things in the house, he knew she would have been the one to tell him where to find them. There was no progress. He was stuck with someone who was no more, so he decided to move out.

That house was too big for him, anyway. He needed something smaller, something warm and empty so he could create new memories. He was never really at home but at work, working late hours. It had been six months already, so he decided that day to go out and buy a new house.

He got out of his car, and just as he was about to cross the road he looked back, checking on his car. He could not help but notice a lady putting down a box next to his car, but he ignored her and moved on.

After doing his shopping he got back after a couple of hours and it was night already, but the box was still there with the lady nowhere to be seen. He could he heard someone crying, and as he got closer to the car it became clear there was a baby in the box with a note written inside: Please take care of me.

He looked around and saw no one, put the note back and got into his car. Just as he tried to drive off something told him to stop and take the baby with him. What could he possibly do with a baby? He worked late at night when would he be able to take care of it? This had to be a test he told himself. God was testing him.

He got out of the car, took the baby and just as he was about to drive off a lady came running and stopped right in front of the car, crying.

”I am sorry,” she said, ”I really thought I could do this but I can’t, please give me back my baby,” she begged him.

He rolled down his window and asked her why she would want to give her child away to a total stranger.
She replied, “Because we have no place to stay. I just got evicted from my flat and I had nowhere to go, instead of letting her suffer with me I decided to give her away for a better life. Any life would be better than sleeping in the streets, but I now realized I can’t. Please give her back to me.”

He knew the feeling. He had gottten to experience the feeling of sleeping in the street but not with a responsibility like a baby in a foreign, unknown and potential home.
”Never,” he said, “never shall you sleep in the streets with me as a witness.”

She stood there, and she looked at him scared but desperate. She convinced him with that look–the desperate look sealed the deal.

”Get in,” he said as he unlocked the doors, but she just stood there and because she saw something in his eyes, she started to shake her head and roll her eyes. .

”Go now,” she shouted out loud.

He still can’t recall who drove or what happened but something happened. His hands and feet switched to auto as everything happened so fast, and he took off there with the car wheels spinning. He left her behind just as he saw creepy guys coming towards his car trying to enter through his rear doors. As he was driving off he could hear his heart beating in his throat, peaking in his rear mirror to see if he was followed, and there the baby was, laughing in his back seat.

As much as he was terrified, that look she gave him made him so happy. It calmed him down and made him feel like a stupid kid as he himself started to laugh, driving to get away from whatever happened a few seconds back. He felt joy after a very long time of pain and suffering. He felt peace, but then it struck him that she is not his. Emotions changed like the weather as reality sunk in and he realized the true nature of what just took place as he pulled over next to a highway, shaking and sweating, heart pounding like it was about to pump out of his chest. She started to cry then, too. His tears started rolling as his life jumped from being lonely and sad to being frightened and confused in one day.

He was ready to move on with his life that day, but this was too much, this was not what he had in mind. Here he was with this beautiful tiny human being and all that was running through his mind were questions he had no answers to. As he drove off and stopped in front of a police station to report the incident, there it was, that look she gave him.

Drugs are addictive and people who use them do crazy things to get more of them, but love is worse than drugs. He felt a connection with this baby, a total stranger, but even he was put on this earth to serve a purpose, and he started to believe there and then that God must have given him the strength to move on with his life on that specific day for a reason. He brought him to that mall for one specific reason: to save this baby, even if it was from her own parents.

Hope, he thought he should name her, for she gave new meaning to his life, and above all she gave him hope after the life storm he’d gone through. Her beautiful, big, round eyes just would not let him drop her at the police station, so he shut the door and home he went.
