My second life started after the worst fight we’d ever had.

“Babe, I am home,” I had called out.

“How was work, babe?” he leaned over to kiss my cheek.

“Work was nerve-racking today. I lost a document for a presentation that was due today; can you believe I had to present without that document?” I threw my bags on the couch.

“I’m sorry, but I believe everything went well after all?”

“Yes, actually, but it was so stimulating I had to skip other sections.”

“Come on, you did your best. There is something I want us to talk about.”

“Ok, can it wait because I really need to take a shower?” I said, heading to the bathroom.

“Yeah sure, I’ve made your favourite: melted cheese spaghetti with meat balls,” he called out.

“You are such a life saver!” I shouted from the shower, and after a couple of minutes I was out, “So what do you want us to talk about?”

“I want to introduce you to my family.”

“What?” I chuckled, thinking that he was fooling around as usual.

“I am serious about this.”

“Why now?”

“There will be no perfect time. Six months is long enough for me to introduce someone I love to my family.”

“Wow, I never expected this so soon; could it wait?”

“Wait till when? What are waiting for exactly? I know you and you know me; I don’t understand why we should wait.”

“I think we are rushing things. Me and my boy…ex-boyfriend waited a little bit longer until we introduced each other to both families.”

“I thought you were better than that. Are you for real comparing me to another man? You know what? Just forget about it, and for the record I think you haven’t moved on yet. Maybe you need some time to think about what you truly want,” he smashed the door closed.

“Wai…t,” he was gone.

I tried to call him, but his phone was off. I left numerous voicemail messages. It was nearly mid-night when I checked on his best friend.

“Hello, Bradley. Sorry to wake you up. It’s Mel; I was wondering if you have seen Jasper?”

“Hey, Mel. Well, I haven’t seen him for some time though. I was out of the country and just arrived home, is everything okay there?”

“Well, everything is fine,” I pulled myself together.

“Melissa, you are crying? Tell me what happened. Did Jasper hit you? Because if he did I swear…”

“No, no, no. I am fine…”

“Well, I am coming over there right now. Surely you are not fine.”

“I said I am fine!” I yelled.

“I wasn’t asking for your permission,” he hung up.

In less than an hour he was there.

“So what happened?” he said.

I told him everything and how I denied seeing Jasper’s family.

“Stop crying. He will come back, I promise. I know Jasper.”

I leaned onto his shoulder to rest my head.

“Hey, look at me,” he said.

I looked deep down into his eyes. I don’t know where the feeling came from; what I knew for sure was that he felt it too. The last thing I remember was closing my eyes and the tenderness of his lips passionately touching mine; the kiss was so real. When I opened my eyes, he just smiled at me.

“Let us go away, Melissa, just the two of us,” he said.

“I cannot do that. You know I am with Jasper,” I replied.

“I love you. In fact, I loved you from the first time Jas introduced you to us, but I haven’t had the courage to tell you how exactly I feel about you until this moment.”

“Jasper is your friend. How could you do that to your best friend?”

“He is my friend, but my feelings aren’t my friend. If the feelings weren’t so strong I wouldn’t have kissed you. What I feel for you is also real,” he replied.

“I need some time to think about this thoroughly.”

After some couple of hours he left, and I went to bed with so much to consider.
