“Officer, you should look at this tape. It will help you with the case,” Officer Chabedi’s friend said.

“What case?” Officer Chabedi responded.

“That murder and rape case.”

“It’s closed! The murderer confessed and the case was closed, so our job is done. What more must we do?!”

“Please just take a look, because justice isn’t served yet.”

“You’re wasting my time. I’ve got a lot of work to do, so please leave my office. See yourself out, and close the door behind you!”

“When you have a minute, take a look at it.”

After the man left, Officer Chabedi was left feeling furious. He didn’t want to hear anything because he was corrupt. His desire for money had gotten him carried away. He was already paid to cover up the truth, and they had threatened to kill his family if he exposed them. So he never bothered himself about digging deep for the truth and being lawful.

So much for money, though. What about those innocent souls who were victims? He too had two daughters, and he was also a brother to two sisters and a husband to a wife. Besides that, he was also a man of the law. He took a vow to fight for justice, so what happened to our so called constitution? Isn’t everyone equal before the law?

I will have to tell the boss about this, because this guy is on my neck!” Officer Chabedi thought to himself. “He won’t keep quiet about it. This might get me in trouble, though. I’ll lose my job, my family and myself too. I can’t afford to lose.”

Officer Chabedi didn’t waste any more time, and he called his boss right away after that. “Boss, we have a problem,” he said.

“I don’t pay you for that!” his boss said. “I pay you to solve my problems, so don’t waste my time! In case you want me to kill your dear family!”

“No! I don’t want that. I’ll find a solution.”

“Do that. Be a man, and stop nagging!”

But officer Chabedi had no solution, though. After all, he had to be a ‘man’ and stop being a ‘sissy’. That solution was nothing other than getting rid of his best friend. He felt like he had no choice, though. After all, that gang was the most notorious and dangerous gang where he lived. He had to do it alone and it must be a clean job.

******************

Officer Chabedi had to be smart about this. No stones needed to be left unturned. So, with his cunning plan, he invited his dear friend for a drink at the pub. Strippers were also there to entertain them. It was quite a noisy place, so he could barely hear his friend speak, and he had to be more audible when he spoke.

“I’m sorry for my insolence,” officer Chabedi said, trying to sound sympathetic. “I didn’t mean to lash out at you that day. You know how hectic my job is, so I’m really sorry, pal.”

“It’s okay, I understand. We’re cool.”

“Your phone is ringing. Aren’t you gonna answer it?” Officer Chabedi said.

“Give me a moment, I’ll be back,” his friend said, walking away to answer his phone.

While his friend was busy answering his phone, Officer Chabedi poured some white powder at his drink. It was poison, so within 24 hours, he would be no more. Nothing would be traced back to him because nothing was going to be found in his friend’s system that could be suspicious.

“Hey pal. I have to go,” Officer Chabedi’s friend said after coming back.

“No. Finish your drink first. You know I don’t like wanting money,” officer Chabedi said cheerfully.

“Oh yeah! Some things will never change, I suppose.”

“Yeah indeed,” his friend said, grinning.

Officer Chabedi looked on as his friend took his last sip. He watched his dear friend dying while faking a smile and pretending to be happy. They had been friends for a very long time, and after a while, he recalled all those crazy moments they had shared together. He suddenly felt his heart sink. He wanted to tell him the truth because he was overwhelmed with guilt and he was confused.

“Are you okay, Chabedi?” his friend asked

“Yes, pal. Perhaps I’m just tired. I think I’ll leave now.”

After a short while, Chabedi left his dying friend alone. He drove off to meet his family. He kept quiet throughout the entire trip, though. He was now a murderer too. A killer of his best friend. Memories of his actions couldn’t leave his corrupted mind throughout the drive, and he couldn’t stop thinking because he felt really guilty.

Before officer Chabedi knew it, a car suddenly appeared in front of his and the light flashed his eyes. He was helpless, and his car crashed. He was wounded so badly from the accident that his soul escaped in his body. So much for being a man of ‘intergrity’, and just like that, fate played a trick on him.
