The next morning was Saturday and I woke up to a smell of breakfast. I peeked in the kitchen and Nthabi was cooking. I was so glad to see her.

“What happened?” I asked.

“The car got stuck and our phones died and we only got help later on. We nearly slept on the side of the road,” she said. I didn’t buy the story because they left so early in the morning and the doctor’s appointment was at 10 am. They had enough time to update me and get home. I went to the bedroom to check on Melusi and he had just stepped out the shower. Our bed was already done and he never fixed the bed. It actually looked like nobody slept in it and if they came back late Melusi would take me to bed. Something was fishy here.

Breakfast was so awkward, they just giggled throughout. It was like I wasn’t even there at all. Apparently Nthabi just had a tummy bug, it was nothing serious. She helped me out with chores before they decided to go out to get some groceries. I decided to do some snooping. I first went through Melusi’s stuff and I didn’t find anything.

I went to Nthabi’s room and I could smell my husband’s cologne the minute I got in. I could still smell him in her bed.

“No no no, this is not happening. Melusi definitely slept here. So this was happening under my nose, in our own house? Maybe I was just being paranoid,” I said to myself but I decided to finish up with the chores. I was taking out Nthabi’s trash when something familiar caught my eye. “A whole pregnancy test with two lines?” I muttered. She was pregnant and I wasn’t told.

We needed to celebrate my little niece or nephew. I was so happy. I prepared dinner and called my brother.

“Hawu bhuti. And you didn’t tell me such great news?”

“Tati, I’m not sure if I’m following,” my brother sounded confused.

“Quit playing! Why didn’t you tell me Nthabi is pregnant?”

“Yini? What!” he screamed on the phone. He didn’t know. I messed up what was probably meant to be a surprise. “I will try to make it to the dinner tati,” he said, excited. I was super excited, I didn’t even tell Melusi and Nthabi. I wanted to surprise them.

As I was still fixing up the table for four people, I got a call from Melusi saying they would arrive a bit late because he had another puncture.

“Wow! He seriously needs to get this car serviced or something. How can this happen twice in a row? He always carries a spare tire,” I said to myself. I went for a quick shower. I watched TV sipping on wine.

Melusi and Nthabi finally got home after about four hours. I was already famished, I was not in the mood anymore. I think I had a little too much wine. I threw the pregnancy test at them the minute they got in.

“The food is in the fridge, serve yourselves,” I left them there with their eyes popping out. I grabbed my plate and headed to the bedroom. Melusi came in looking embarrassed. He couldn’t even look at me.

“When were you going to tell me?” He just looked down and choked on his spit.

“I can explain love, you were not meant to find out like that. We were eventually going to tell you,” Melusi moved closer to me.

“Well, I called my brother already and he’s coming over. He didn’t even know. So explain to him when he gets here.”

I don’t even know why I was so upset. I think it was the wine. He walked out and I finished my plate, tossed it aside and slept.
