Lukhanyiso’s father always had a frown on his face. Ever since he lost his wife after Lukhanyo’s birth he has been the saddest man in the entire world. Lukhanyiso realised this, and he didn’t like to see his father always sad.

Lukhanyiso watched the show and saw a symbol he could not recognise above Luxury City. He narrowed his eyes as he looked at the sign, but he could not identify it. “Tata, what do three straight lines represent?” he asked his father who was in the kitchen.

“A fog, where is the symbol in the map?”

“It is in the Ngonyama Segment, it’ll arrive in 6 hours. So that means…” Lukhanyiso paused as he started counting his fingers, “… at 12, it will strike at midnight.” Lukhanyiso shouted across the room.

“Do you know what a fog is Lukhanyiso?” Lukhanyiso’s father asked as he came in the living room carrying two bowls of food.

“No, the teacher hasn’t taught us about the fog yet.” Lukhanyiso replied as he accepted the bowl with a smile,

“Well I’ll tell you once you give thanks for the food.” Lukhanyiso’s father teased.

Lukhanyiso gave thanks swiftly and sat next to his father, listening for the explanation.

“Okay fine… the fog is some sort of precipitation that looks like a cloud. It moves slowly but once you are inside the fog… you cannot see anything. There’s a myth that claims that souls of unsettled spirits hide inside, hoping for a warrior that will help them find the light so that they can pass on to heaven.” Lukhanyiso’s father declared as he glazed at his son’s big dark eyes.

Lukhanyiso was amazed and wanted to hear more from his father. “Tell me more, Tata!”

“Well it is rumoured that your great grandmother was once a warrior that helped the unsettled souls find the light. The souls are not visible to an ordinary human being without the gift of divine sight.” Lukhanyiso’s father said as he pointed on Lukhanyiso’s steaming bowl.

“What is the gift of sight Tata?” Lukhanyiso asked as he munched down his food.

“The gift of divine sight is the ability to see things that one can’t. The gift of divine sight has an advantage and a disadvantage. The advantage is that you are able to see unsettled souls inside a mist and the disadvantage is that inside the mist are several spirits that are very scary, they torment warriors who are not strong enough. If I had the gift of divine sight and I stumbled inside the fog, I would be able to see dead people who haven’t passed on to heaven.” Lukhanyiso’s father said with a crazy smile.

“Wow… do you possess the gift of divine sight?” Lukhanyiso asked as he finished his food and placed his empty bowl on the floor,

“No I don’t. In order to use the sight, you have to say a chant. It goes

Oh Divine Entity,

Permit me to use the Divine Sight.

I want to abet the unsettled one.

If you utter the chant wrong, you will lose your ordinary sight.” His father said.

Maybe I should try out the chant so that I can find my wife’s ghost, his father thought to himself. But I feel like she didn’t tell me something. “Before your mother died she promised to tell me something about you and the future of Ngonyama Segment, but she died before she could tell me. I wish I could hear what she wanted to tell me.” Lukhanyiso’s father kept quiet, as a frown crept in.

“I’m sorry Tata.” Lukhanyiso said as he gave his father a warm hug, he didn’t like seeing someone sad. Seeing someone sad broke his heart and he always tried to help people who were sad.

Lukhanyiso’s father squeezed and smiled at him, “Did I tell you that I love you?”

“Yes, many times.” Lukhanyiso answered as he received a lot of kisses which were planted all over his face.

“You’ve been a very good child Lukhanyiso. Tell me what good children receive at night?” Lukhanyiso’s father asked as he collected the two empty bowls.

“Ice-cream,” Lukhanyiso exclaimed with a huge grin.

Lukhanyiso jumped up and down as his father walked out of the living room and inside the kitchen. Lukhanyiso stopped bouncing on top of the couch as a meteor filled with one great idea landed on his head; he was going to enter the fog and see if he has the gift of divine sight. If he does, then he was going to find his mother and retrieve what she wanted to say to Lukhanyiso’s father before she died. Lukhanyiso’s grin widened as he realized how excellent the idea was.
