The following day, I go to stand outside Amanda’s day care before one even strikes the clock. I don’t want to be late. At half past one, I walk in and get her. I then sign in and leave with her.

“Cool car!” Amanda screams.

“You like it?” I ask, and she nods in response. “Well, good cause you’re riding it,” I continue, laughing and dangling the keys.

“Can we get my doll today, momma?” Amanda asks.

“What did you call me?” I ask, near tears.

“Momma?” Amanda responds, shrugging. “You’re my momma, right?” she continues.

I nod in response, and we get into the car.

Later, I drop Amanda off at Missy’s, and she has her teddy with her, dragging it. “Mommy! Look what momma got me,” she shouts.

“It’s lovely. Go play with it in your room,” Missy says, kissing Amanda’s cheek.

“Thank you for allowing me to be part of her life,” I say.

“You’re her parent,” Missy says, shrugging.

“It’s a pity I can’t be in yours,” I say, sitting on one of the chairs in the kitchen.

Instead of responding, Missy smiles, grabs me by my shirt, and kisses the hell out of me.

“Is this hello or goodbye?” I ask, breathless.

“You decide,” she responds as she kisses me again.
