As deranged and sick as Thabisile was she blurted out the whole truth to her friend A. Amara couldn’t believe what she heard, she simply couldn’t stomach the fact that she might be an accomplice to what could be an attempted murder. She couldn’t stand to be in the same room as Thabisile.

“How sick could Thabisile be?” she said in disbelief. Thabisile could not be hazed by the fact that she might kill someone and actually become a murderer. All was normal to her, she was perfectly fine and not bothered, and she even went as far as buying herself wine to celebrate her achievement.

In her room Amara was pacing up and down, trying to make sense of all that had happened. She couldn’t stomach the fact that she could potentially be an accessory to murder, if it came to that.

She felt used and betrayed by her friend. A friend she considered a sister. She trusted her with her whole being and was shocked that she had done this. She then made the decision to tell Mongezi all about this, she sent him a text asking him to meet her the following day because she had something important to tell him — something concerning Melisa. Mongezi replied by saying they should meet up as soon as possible. The meeting was arranged for the next morning.

Amara couldn’t sleep, she kept on tossing and turning and just decided to sit up in her bed and wait for morning.

At exactly nine o’clock Mongezi found Amara waiting for him at the cafeteria. Mongezi could see from the beginning that she was a mess and wondered what may be the cause of that.

Amara started narrating the whole story to him, starting from when Thabisile started having feelings for him and how obsessed she was about him. This came as a shock, but it all made sense. Mongezi couldn’t help but feel guilty because Melisa had to suffer because of him and what was upsetting is the fact that they weren’t even dating. Mongezi thanked Amara but told her that she needed to tell campus security in order for justice to be served. He then proceeded to go to the hospital to check on Melisa.

Mongezi arrived at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital. The receptionist told him Melisa’s ward number and he proceeded to go there, along the way he kept on thinking it was his fault she was in this condition and contemplated whether he go and see her at all. He decided to see her. When he arrived he found a nurse talking to her, he was happy to see her awake and conversing – the worst was over.

He knocked and the nurse excused herself.

“Hey, how are you feeling?” he asked, although he could see how terrible she looked.

“I’m alive,” she joked.

They continued talking and Mongezi just decided to tell her the truth as to how she ended up in the hospital. Melisa felt a lump build up in her throat, she couldn’t believe what she was hearing, and thanked Mongezi for all he had done for her, but asked him to leave and begged him to never come back as she didn’t want anything to do with him anymore. Mongezi felt defeated but he knew he had to respect her wishes.

“I’m so sorry Melisa. I hope you’ll feel better soon,” he said.

Melisa stayed in hospital for a week and was then discharged. Thabisile was arrested and Amara was acquitted of any charges provided that she would testify against her friend, which she agreed to.

Melisa and Mongezi were no longer talking to each other. Melisa went as far as changing her number because she constantly received phone calls and texts from people sympathising with her for the ordeal she went through and she just couldn’t deal with all the attention. With God’s grace she wrote all her exams before university closed.

Although all seemed well with her, she still couldn’t come to terms with the fact that the person she loved, couldn’t be hers. As for Mongezi, from that day at the hospital he realised that he loved Melisa but he couldn’t have her because she hated him. The year ended and the two had not made any attempt to contact each other.
