“Oooh! Katlego maan, this plane mara… It’s adding to my headache,” expressed Katherine in a soft voice as the sensation of the plane’s sound and vibrations slightly shook their bodies from beneath their seats. While the plane’s speed, sound and momentum intensified by the second, just before it finally took off, for Pretoria.

Katherine’s shook facial expression clearly opposed the beautiful sunrise that shone through the window next to her. Her fingers pressed against her forehead as she took slow deep breaths, struggling to regain her composure.

But despite all this, despite his slowly speeding heartbeat, he was still smiling. To the point where he began giggling, not only at Katherine’s soft snores as she’d recently passed out while typing something on her phone. Maybe from all that effort from the previous night where she’d gone all out to give him then surprise get-together that literally knocked him off his feet.

He even began giggling louder, to the point where his giggles aroused a playfully concerned look from the blonde lady next to him; as the reembrace of a certain text did more than tickle his lungs.

“You actually made my day,” the thought that filled his throat with giggles as her voice replayed in his head. He couldn’t help imagining her saying it.

His temperature soon rose to the mirage of seeing her face upon some distant orangish clouds. A short, illusive daydream that his red, baggy-eyes then succumbed to. Katlego took one last look at Zintle’s profile picture before putting his phone away, shortly before letting out a sigh and opening up to the sweet lady, whose big, colourful eyes contained hues of his favourite colour –green.

Meanwhile back at school, Donnel felt detached from his favourite teacher’s Life Orientation lesson. His head leant against his left arm as he ignorantly watched as Ms De Waal going on about Varsity applications just after she had given them a lecture about the dire consequences of unprotected sex.

His eyes were still heavy from lack of sleep. Possibly from leaving Katlego and Karabo’s place late, if not being haunted by dirty texts from Collette late last night. When the sound of the siren finally slipped into his eardrums, he quickly switched on his phone and put on his striped big blue ‘Wittebome High’ blazer, where he was a proud matriculant.

“She’s in grade 12B at Wittebome High,” he could still hear Katlego’s words lurking at the back of his head, before those pictures of her soon flashed before his eyes and made his dream a reality…

When he saw her, and her two friends, beautifully swerving past the traffic of students and teachers walking in the hallway, just before their eyes finally met and sparked a common memory, a fleeting glance that made him want to slip out a smooth ‘hey’. This was until one of her friends boldly blurted out Katlego’s name without even realising it. This made him feel bad for smiling at Zintle.

But moments later, just after a brief encounter with Collette at the tuck shop, one that left his cheek marked with a kiss as he made his way to the fence, his mind, failed to process the weekend stories that his friends were enthusiastically explaining; both verbally and physically. Sethu was laughing softly as usual.

Collette, and her friends quickly turned around to give him a wink that left an aroused smile playing on Donnel’s lips. All while Collette and her friends were briskly overtaking them as they rushed towards the fence where her supposedly cheating boyfriend, Karabo, would soon be, regardless of the cameras.

All the while Karabo and his friend slowly walked up towards that halfway point of the fence where they liked to meet. Donnel’s eyes soon narrowed with concentration as he noticed Katlego smilingly waving just before Collette. When he saw her, and her two friends, beautifully swerving past the traffic of students and teachers walking in the hallway, just before their eyes finally met and sparked a common memory; a fleeting glance that made him want to slip out a smooth ‘hey’, until one of her friends boldly blurted out Katlego’s name without even realising it… Making him feel bad for smiling at her, Zintle.

Zintle then began walking towards the fence, much to Karabo’s ambivalent amusement, as well as Collette’s annoyance.

“Zintle and Karabo had now met, damn it,” thought Donnel.
