Sam’s POV

“Everyone, I know I am engaged to Hope, but the truth is I don’t love her and I never did,” I said and everyone became quite quiet. “I expect you to respect my decision of wanting to be with Lisa. Dad, it’s not you getting married but I’m the one and this is my life. I have done everything you’ve asked of me but this is something I have to do for myself and out of my own will,” I concluded.

“Did you bring her here to see me embarrassed like this?”
I knew Hope would say something like that.

“We could’ve talked about this in private!” she shouted.

“Wow,” I chuckled and clapped my hands twice, “So you say. Hope how many times have I told you that I don’t love you and I only see you as a friend but you never wanted to listen. I pleaded countless times not to go through with the engagement but you didn’t want to hear me out. The thing is, you never listen!”

“Sam, can’t you see she doesn’t love you? She only wants your money. By now I’m sure she has bewitched you and has you wrapped around her little finger. It won’t be long before she sacrifices you to her ancestors or some evil cult, you never know, black people are capable of anything. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.”

“Hold it right there, first of all you don’t know me and we just met. You are in my country and I won’t let you speak to me as if I followed you to your own country,” Lisa defended herself. Wow! I admired this lady.

“So what if this is your country, huh? I’m sure your police will favour me and they won’t even think twice before backsliding you. If your own people can treat you in such a manner what kind of treatment do you expect us to give you? They won’t care if this is your country, this is not your house.”

Trust Hope to crush you with no effort. I wanted to defend Lisa but she had to stand on her own and defend herself.

“Are you saying this to annoy me?” Lisa asked Hope.

“Totally, and do you think marrying Sam will change that? No baby girl, it will only make it worse.”

“Why so much hate? Is it because I’m black or because Sam loves me? “

“For both reasons actually; Sam is mine. You are black and what kind of children will the family have? You are going to destroy the family’s race. Can’t you see that? I’m simply sharing some common sense; I can see you’re lacking plenty of it.”

“Hope, I don’t care, in fact, you can say all you want but that won’t change me, especially my skin colour. I’m black yes and I’m proud of it because no one will ever take that away from me. So what if I destroy the family’s race? Aren’t you whites on the forefront saying we are all one and we should love each other despite belonging to different races. You say we should make the world a better place but on the other side you’re the first to make the world a better place for everyone.”

Lisa continued, “Why can’t you walk your talk? Why do you have to always poison everyone’s mind for your own benefits. Sam loves me and not you, marrying you won’t change that fact in any way, but it will only make the situation worse. He won’t start loving you, but he will only despise you more as days will go by and you will be the one to suffer for it, not me. You will only be pushing him away from you.” Lisa paused and laughed a bit, mockingly, “So what if I gave him a love potion, it’s only working in my favour right? I can even give you some if you want.”

“I thought you were more mature and had more insight, but I was very wrong about that. Right now I think I should sacrifice you instead. It seems my ancestors are craving a white person like you. You people act like Jesus left you the responsibility of the world after He died………”

“Enough!” my dad exclaimed with rather a commanding voice.

Indeed, it was enough. We thought he would say more but he only looked at us. “Lisa, you’re going to make a good wife.”

“Finally someone said it,” Angel and Thomson said at once and we all laughed while Hope’s sombre mood was evident by the tears she shed.
