I am from a place where one eye meets yours,

While the other looks for faults in you to talk about over tea,

I am from a place where they first calculate your profit,

Then they calculate how much they can gain,

Where I come from, church bells mean business time,

Where Reverends sell miracles and search everyone’s pockets with greedy eyes.

I am from a place where politicians shake hands in public,

And plot against each other behind our eyes,

I am from a place where patriarchy is well practised by misogynistic brothers and fathers,

I am from a place where sexuality determines survival,

If you are homosexual, they eliminate you.

KwaXhosa zibenza zibutya,

I guess that’s why where I am from, fathers molest their own.
