When I was young like
An embryo, you watered my
Life in every second of my
Existence on earth

You brought me compost
Manure to cover my body
So that my roots could grow
Tall like a blue gum tree

When birds tried to cut off my
Hair, you used to chase them
Away so that I could shine to
The world like a star at night

Now I have grown up into
A mother like Africa with
Children on my back and others
All over my palm

My children are now your
Food when you’re hungry
For they are tasty in your
Mouth like God’s words

You have now turned
Against my life and I
Have now become speechless
In every action you take

For I cannot run away
Like a statue from a
Museum, my eyes just
Watch you kill my babies
