I’m from a place I’ve only heard about
The land of milk and honey
I really like how that sounds

I’m from a place I don’t know
The image of it is as white as snow
I’m from a place with a history of war
Where wives hunted husbands that are hard core
Where democracy and rights were washed offshore

I’m from a place where gun shots are like fireworks
I’m from a place where love and prosperity
Are preached then thrown out

I’m in a place where I don’t belong
Even though I grew up here
I have a surname that doesn’t go along

I’m in a place I’m not from
The place I’m from
I have only heard stories of its history

The place I’m from is Burundi
For I carry my ancestors’ legacy
I’m from that place
But I have chosen to create my own place
