When I was a young boy,
my mother would call me
all the way to come home and eat.
It matters to me how she cared for us.
It matters to me how she loved us.
It matters to me how she would wake up
early in the morning to get us ready for school.
It matters to me how she would shout
and chase away the troubles we caused.
It matters how she would go out and hustle
so we could go to bed with full tummies.
I’m telling you, it does matter to me
how she would give us her meal
to share when we were not full.
It does … it does matter how I’d sometimes
see her crying for untold reasons.
She would protect us from
all that were against us.
She did …
She did, that’s why to me
she matters a lot.
In my heart
it matters … it matters.
