she was innocent

do you know how it feels when a police officer,
who happens to be your uncle,
comes knocking at your door
at one thirty in the morning
coming to tell you
that your sister has been raped
yes, it happened to her
she was innocent

your sister, what? no!
not the strong woman you know,
but it happened to her
she was innocent

from what you heard,
she struggled
she fought
but she couldn’t anymore.
she was scavenging for her underclothes
like a street dog looking for a bone in the trashcan!
you feel numb and you shiver from fright
‘cause you thought she went for a chat at friends,
and would return her usual bubbly self
but it happened to her
she was innocent

now you’re in bed with thoughts racing
from a bad year
to a bad life
how must she feel?
she was wearing her usual clothes
it wasn’t her
she was innocent
but it still happened to her

it was a normal cold Tuesday night
I prayed the Lord to keep her safe,
return her home safe,
she’s safe alright, but harmed
my prayer worked
I just prayed it out wrong

she or ‘her’ never deserved it
but it happened to her
she was innocent.
