Before, my original mother was kind to my being
But my refuge became my foe fosterparent

At school they called me a kwerekwere,
I searched the dictionary and found nothing,
But it was still painful
Even teachers treated me differently from others;
For just one wrong answer I was called a good for nothing fool

Our neighbours spat at my footsteps,
So says my mother, “Community’s acceptance takes baby step.”

But from there came an angel
An angel that changed all that

An angel, son of someone, saw me as somebody
He cared enough to encourage everyone to see me as a human being
The teacher that helped me for a mysterious reason
He changed my life and gave me new hope

Now I am no longer called a newbie
I am now Bertina Bernabers, best learner in Grade 11b.
